cw: pregnancy loss
I live in Alabama, a state with a total abortion ban, and was so overjoyed when I found out I was pregnant last month. I’ve been doing everything right. Stopped caffeine, took my prenatal vitamins, followed every rec. But I started bleeding on Tuesday.🧵
Top priority helping my students feel safe, confident, and supported in their first week of middle school. It can be scary. They don’t need rules then. They need support and connection. Skip the syllabus.
You know what students won't remember in the first week? The rules and procedures of your class.
You know what students will remember? Whether or not they felt safe, connected, and how you made them feel.
I don’t see literature as an escape, but as a compass. Its main goal is not to let you hide from real life; it’s to help you navigate it by reminding you that there is more to life than everyday drudgery and consumerism and money-making.
@BrianHuber3 And the school staff that are ages 25-65? The high risk individuals kids and staff come in contact with outside of school? I’d rather lose a semester or year of learning (and my salary) than any member of our community.
@WeinsteinEdu Today, a teacher told me that what hurts most isn’t just that she’s depressed and drowning, it’s that no one with the power to help is asking how she’s doing. Hang in there, friends. ❤️ #edchat
We need to stop glorifying the going above and beyond parts of being an educator that take away from time with their family and at the sacrifice of their mental health.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
Teacher retention: if you want to keep the best teachers, treat them like they are the best. Few teachers leave an environment where they feel valued, supported, appreciated, and treated like professionals.
