Five months after Freddie Mercury’s death from AIDS-related complications, his Queen bandmates organized a star-studded tribute concert at Wembley Stadium. Featuring artists like Elton John, David Bowie, Phil Collins, George Michael, and Metallica, the event raised funds for AIDS research and launched the Mercury Phoenix Trust. All 72,000 tickets sold out in three hours, and the concert was broadcast live to about one billion viewers in 76 countries.
In 1986, Queen performed their last concert with Freddie Mercury.
The show took place at Knebworth. More than 120,000 people came to see Freddie and hear Queen live. None of the audience knew that they were witnessing Freddie’s final live performance.

Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen begin their first tour after Freddie Mercury’s death at Brixton Academy in London, with singer Paul Rodgers. Bassist John Deacon does not participate, having retired in 1997.

Queen filmed the video for “I Want to Break Free” at Limehouse Studio in London, directed by David Mallet. The video, a parody of the British soap opera Coronation Street with the band dressed in drag, was initially banned by MTV in the U.S. Guitarist Brian May later said it harmed the band’s image in America.
