My son chose his father in the divorce and I said okay and meant it and drove home alone and sat in my driveway for 47 minutes and those 47 minutes are the thing I have never been able to tell anyone.
He was 14.

Old enough for the court to consider his preference. Old enough to sit across from me in the mediator’s office with his hands on his knees and his father’s jaw and my eyes and say the thing he had clearly been preparing to say in a voice that was steadier than I expected from a boy who had cried at animated movies until he was 11.

He said he wanted to live with his dad.
He gave reasons. Reasonable ones. His father’s house was closer to his school. His best friends lived in that neighborhood. His football team.

His routine. All of it logical. All of it true. All of it absolutely nothing to do with loving me less and everything to do with being 14 and needing the things 14 year old boys need.
I knew that.

I knew it completely and rationally and with the full understanding of a woman who had been a mother for 14 years and knew her son and knew this was not abandonment.

I looked at him across the table.
I said okay.
I meant it.
I drove home alone.
I sat in my driveway for 47 minutes.....
