I have urged newly recruited Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) staff to make integrity, professionalism and fairness the foundation of their work as Government pushes to strengthen domestic revenue mobilisation.

I made the call at the pass-out ceremony of 174 newly recruited URA staff who completed a one-month leadership training at the Oliver Reginald Tambo School of Leadership.

I told the graduates that their responsibility goes beyond collecting taxes, stressing that every interaction with a taxpayer should help build confidence in URA and Government.

Every interaction with a taxpayer is an opportunity to build trust in URA and in Government.

Revenue administration must be anchored in fairness, professionalism and integrity, urging the officers to use the information, resources and authority entrusted to them responsibly.

I emphasized that their role goes beyond collecting revenue and have a responsibility to help build a culture in which Ugandans understand that paying taxes is part of building the country we all want.

I also challenged the new officers to embrace technology and continuous learning while remembering that their ultimate responsibility is to serve Ugandans and urged them to remember that this is not the destination, but the beginning of a greater responsibility.

The training comes as Government continues to pursue stronger domestic revenue mobilisation, with the broader objective of raising Uganda’s revenue-to-GDP ratio to 20%.

Uganda’s economy has grown to Shs 250.4 trillion, but our tax-to-GDP ratio remains at about 14%. We must strengthen domestic revenue mobilisation and raise this to at least 20% to finance our development without excessive dependence on borrowing.

A hospital in rural Uganda runs surgery off-grid, and a surgeon in New York can watch the operation live.

The Mount Sinai Kyabirwa Surgical Facility sits in Jinja, Uganda, built with local labor using red clay dug from nearby sites and fired into brick on location. Those bricks form perforated screen walls that ventilate the entire building naturally, no mechanical cooling anywhere except the sealed operating rooms.

The roof is a canopy of solar panels, shaped after banana leaves, the same plant growing wild around the site. The panels shade the building and power it. A battery system stores enough energy to keep the facility running for two full days if the grid fails, which in that region, it often does.

Twenty miles of underground fiber optic cable connect this rural facility to Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. Surgeons there consult live, video calling directly into operations happening on the ground in Uganda. Water comes from a well and gravity tanks, filtered and sterilized onsite. Roof runoff flushes the toilets and waters a garden that feeds patients and staff. Waste is treated onsite too, nothing trucked out, nothing dependent on infrastructure that doesn't reliably exist there.

This is not a hospital that survives despite being off-grid. It was designed to run better because of it.

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba Donates Pickup Truck to Uganda Media Centre

Kampala, Sunday September 20, 2026

The Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba has donated a brand new utility Toyota Land Cruiser pickup truck to the Uganda Media Centre (UMC). The vehicle is expected to boost UMC operations, especially long distance travel across the country.

The vehicle was delivered on behalf of the CDF to the Executive Director UMC Mr. Alan Kasujja this Sunday by the Acting Director Defence Public Information, Col Chris Magezi. The donation is a demonstration of the close interagency cooperation in government to enhance service delivery and strengthen transparency and accountability across sectors.

In October 2015, 21-year-old Dutch medical student Sophia Koetsier told her friends she was going to the toilet at a safari camp in Uganda.

She never came back.

A search began that evening. The following morning, searchers found her water bottle near the river.

The next day, the search turned strange.

Near the same spot, her trousers were found torn into strips, some tied to dead wood on the ground. Her underwear was hanging high in a tree. One shoe was found nearby, clean and dry.

There were no signs of a struggle anywhere.

Ugandan police said she had drowned or been taken by an animal. Her mother, a retired journalist, never accepted this explanation and has spent years fighting for the truth.

Testing later found another person's DNA on her underwear. It has never been identified.

More than ten years later, her family is still searching for answers.

Mourners have gathered in Fort Portal, Uganda, to bury King Oyo Nyimba of the ancient Tooro Kingdom.

He ascended the throne in 1995 aged three, becoming the world’s youngest reigning monarch at the time. He died of cancer aged 34 last month.
