This is a message from Casey’s brother @RyanHokeWAVE3:
My younger brother @Queer_Arts (Casey Hoke) passed away yesterday in the Los Angeles, CA area. My family is heartbroken. We ask for privacy, but at the same time want to make sure Casey’s friends and connections know.

#QueerArtHistory of the Day "Sleep: Deux Femmes Noires" by Mickalene Thomas (2013)
Combines the pose & intention from Gustave Courbet’s Le Sommeil (1866) with Thomas' claim of black women in media and art as erotic & soft, just as the women in Courbet’s painting are portrayed.

#QueerArtHistory of the Day: Love that Not Love by Herbert Singleton (1990)
During this time, love between white men was just on the brink of major popular culture & television, while love between black men was scant in media, hence the title: "Love That Not Love”
#QueerArtHistory of the Day: Le Sommeil by Gustave Courbet (1866)- Painted for the Turkish ambassador to Paris for a private collection. During this time, many paintings were made for the prying straight male gaze into the romantic and sexual lives of women who loved women.
