Bridging the gaps between research, practice, & policy to create LGBTQ-affirming schools. Founded 2006. Sociology in action. Directors: @PayneElizabethe @mjs4
We are honored to share that we have received a @Spencer_Fdn Award for our research on creating affirming schools for gender and sexual minority youth. We are so grateful to the Foundation and its staff for support of our work. @PayneElizabethe @mjs4
I was always moved that he remembered me, that he thought to check in on me. He unsurprisingly seemed to have shown many others such kindness. He was an example of what a supportive academic community could be and a beautiful human being who shared so much of himself with others.
We join w others on social media who never met @raulpacheco in person, but received his immense kindness & support over many years. We began conversations about qual research in public policy. He checked on me (Payne) regularly through the years, often when I needed it most.

@BrookingsGov#DepartmentofEd Some demographics of students (including LGBTQ) are impacted by hostile climates leading to absenteeism. Research has well established this. How do you balance attempts to reduce it with ignoring “woke” “red herrings”?
If 67% of Americans oppose book bans & 75% trust librarians, why did book bans triple last year? I suppose a small group of committed people—even if misguided—really can change the world. The super majority has to come off the sidelines to defend schools. https://t.co/8of07Jb9me
Yes, books are being targeted. Yes, they are being removed from shelves and discarded. Yes, they are being banned. But what is the human cost beyond the shelves?

The Supreme Court recently upheld a coach’s private prayer bc it was after the game, on his free time, & didn’t coerce anyone. This prayer by Walters is the exact opposite—using all the pomp & circumstance of his office & requiring students to observe it. https://t.co/dh4wxZkh6a
@joshuaweishart Reported Hate Crimes in schools more than doubled since 2015. SEL often avoids address of bias and discrimination. Work on racism, sexism, and biases both individual and systemic should be woven into school life.
Our new report "Ripping Away Our Freedoms" just dropped at https://t.co/dIgoP826xs.
Here's a 🧵 on what you need to know about Republicans' attempts to implement #Project2025's attacks on LGBTQI+ Americans' rights:
Study (N=200 courses) tested 3 interventions to reduce gender bias in student evals, but none were effective. "Women who were tough graders or taught large classes received more criticism than men with the same grading style or class size." @kimelsesser

LGBTQ+ school hate crimes have sharply risen. In some states, hate crimes on K-12 campuses have more than quadrupled. Calls to LGBTQ+ youth hotlines are increasing with many drawing a connection to the political climate. As the election nears, check in on your queer students.
