It’s been a turbulent but ultimately rewarding first half for the stock market. In this week’s edition of Three on Thursday, we spotlight the S&P 500 Index (“Index”)—one of the most trusted gauges of U.S. equity performance.

The Index, which tracks 500 of the largest publicly traded companies using a market-cap-weighted methodology, ended the first half of 2025 with a total return of 6.2%, despite a peak-to-trough drawdown of 18.8%. Remarkably, it closed June at all-time highs.
