The name “Maundy” is from the Latinword mandatum (or mandatum novum) which relates to the English words “commandment” or “a new mandate”. It refers to Jesus’ words after he washed his disciple’s feet. He instructed them with a new commandment–to love one another as he loved them.

Maundy Thursday is the Thursday during Holy Week and remembers when Jesus Christ instituted the Eucharist during the Last Supper. It also commemorates the practice of ceremonial foot-washing to imitate Jesus, who washed his Apostles’ feet before the Last Supper...

as a sign and example of humility, love and service. Holy Thursday also commemorates the events that took place on the night before Jesus’ crucifixion.

Christ became like us in all ways except sin. C.f Hebrew 4:14. God already made us in His image and likeness, but Jesus elevated humanity even further. He will continue to have a human nature for the rest of eternity.

The Annunciation is the angel Gabriel’s announcement to Mary that she would bear the Son of God, Jesus Christ. It also marks her acceptance, her “Fiat,” of God’s will. C.f Luke 1: 25-38. This is the beginning of the Incarnation when Jesus took on His human nature.
