16 October 1925 | French Jew, Charles Gottllieb, was born in Nancy to Jacob and Dvora, who had emigrated from Poland.

During the war, he joined the resistance at just 16. In 1944, he was arrested in Lyon, interrogated, and then tortured by Klaus Barbie. Charles Gottlieb was deported to Auschwitz at the age of 19, on convoy no. 78, dated August 11, 1944, from the Drancy camp.

On 17/18 January 1945, he was taken on the death march to Mauthausen. He was liberated on 7 May 1945 in Ebensee.

After a convalescence in Nice, he returned to Nancy. He worked in various professions, including second-hand goods, ready-to-wear clothing, and jersey dress manufacturing. Since 2004, he has regularly spoken to middle school students about the horrors of Auschwitz as part of their duty of remembrance.

He passed away in 2015.
