The best leaders I've coached have been like mirrors and sponges.
When I ask them who their favorite player is they take a selfie.
When i throw a bunch of useless info at them they forget it like they’re squeezing the water out of a sponge.
Coaches: Empathy for your athletes doesn’t mean agreeing with them.
Its more than likely they are better at baseball than you ever were.
Empathy means asking them how to help the rest of the team.
The best coaches use their assets.
If you don’t love your team culture, If you don’t love your role or playing time…
Don't complain to others because they won’t get it. They’re use to being average and can’t understand someone who has goals. Instead do what’s best for you...transfer to another school.
Mindset is everything.
Corona gonna get me vs. I’m gonna get Corona.
You get to choose who gets who.
Stop waiting for things to get you when you can go out and get them.
The best coaches I’ve been around excel at:
- Retelling everyone how good they were
- Making sure we were good at bunting
- Teaching us cross country running
- Giving advice every pitch
- Making us use wristband playbooks for signs
- Trying to get the next better job
Things I wish I would have known as a player: My playing time isn’t based on me being a good teammate. It’s not based on me showing up early or leaving late. It’s not the coach playing favorites, it’s the coach playing the best players. If I’m not playing it’s because of me.
Things a coach should have known about that player: How much time, frustration, and sacrifice has gotten them to this point. How they are worried about not being good enough. How they just want support & someone to believe in them.
This is about more than just a game.
Champions don't just trust the process. They CREATE the process.
Creating the process means everyone follows their lead. Teammates rely on the champion to carry the team, even if their back gets sore. The champion is the only person that can save their miserable season.
I don’t always love softball, but when I do I’ll be sure to tell you about it.
On this day, congrats to me on loving softball again.
It’s great to go home, especially when it’s the only place still willing to give me a home.

My goal for every athlete I've ever coached is that they get paid! Hopefully when they get older they’ll realize that those of us who demanded their best never made it ourselves and are hoping to live our dreams through them (and take credit for it).
Great coaches know when to just sit back and watch. To let the athlete be an athlete. It's about knowing that RELATIONSHIP.
If an athlete knows that you trust them and you are willing to let them be fail without always critiquing them, they will perform without hesitation.
Losers: Assemble in large groups because they are the majority and they rally against winners.
Winners: Assemble in small groups and have very few other winners to rely on for support.
Which one are you?
@CoachLisle
So you see, they’ll try to trick you w/things you know very little about just to keep you coming back ( like they’re the only ones that have the answers). Well now you’re armed w/their verbiage & can keep them in check...until they make up new words to keep you guessing.
