Digger, starring Tom Cruise and directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, could turn out to be a pretty big deal for Hollywood, maybe even a game-changer. It stands out especially for star-driven originals, blending serious auteur vision with mainstream appeal and reminding everyone why theatrical event movies still matter.
At around $125 million with no franchise safety net, just Cruise’s star power, this wild comedy of catastrophic proportions has a real shot at showing studios that bold, original mid-to-high-budget films can still work. If it clicks, we might see more of them instead of the usual franchise overload.
The movie is being pitched as one of Cruise’s boldest swings in years: a totally transformative role that’s as physical as it is comedic. A strong response could lock in his post-Mission: Impossible phase as something deeper than pure action and it might even put him in awards contention.

Blade Runner (1982) keeps the basic premise of Philip K. Dick’s novel & little else. The novel is a philosophical meditation on empathy, religion & what it means to be human. Ridley transforms it into a noir masterpiece with an entirely different identity
The Shining (1980) is proof that a film can stray far from its source and still become a masterpiece. Stephen King famously disliked many of Stanley Kubrick’s changes, yet the movie went on to become one of the most influential horror films ever made.
When Monica Bellucci was criticized for being “too old” to play a Bond girl at 50, Daniel Craig had the perfect response:
“We’re talking about Monica Bellucci, for God’s sake. When someone like that wants to be Bond girl, you count yourself lucky!”

35 years ago today, TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY (1991) was released.
Imagine seeing it without trailers. The moment the T-800 is revealed as John’s protector instead of his killer would have been one of cinema’s greatest twists.
