The amount of employers (and members of the public) like “why would bars and restaurants need to close, it’s just a red weather warning…”
This is despite entire bus and train companies cancelling all services due to there being a *serious threat to life*.
It’s almost as if the safety of hospitality workers is less important than others in the minds of some people…
The media in a frenzy about Sue Grays salary of £170k per year, for one of the most important jobs in the UK.
What about the CEO of British Gas, who last year took home £8.2 million, whilst all our bills rocketed? Where's the outrage there?
Selling two standing tickets to Christine and the Queens in Edinburgh September 8th at the Usher Hall £43 each dm me if interested #christineandthequeens#Edinburgh
An absolutely disgraceful decision which will most acutely affect the lowest paid and most vulnerable workers that keep the city’s night-time economy alive in bars, hotels & clubs.
They will now have to chose between 2 hours wages for a taxi or walking home.
Single parents are disproportionately impacted by poverty + rising costs.
This survey reveals
80% single parents struggling with energy costs.
67% struggling with food costs.
86% single parents say rising costs impacting their mental health.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
(1/4) Happy Friday from the policy team here at Gingerbread!
This week we were proud to sign a joint letter to the #MinistryofJustice in opposition to the proposed mediation reforms 👇
- Benefit levels are 7.5% lower in real terms than they were a decade ago
- Benefit levels are a government responsibility, set by the Treasury
- Universal Credit is a more responsive mechanism to set benefit levels and should be used to better target support
Here’s a car v a bus trying to travel 6 miles between two heavily populated areas of Glasgow, add on a 10 minute wait at the bus stop and thats over 3x the journey time at a cost of £5.40. People are angry because the system doesn’t work and the solution provided isn’t helpful.
The issue is when a 12 minute car journey takes 40 mins, the bus doesn’t show and then they charge you £5.40 for the privilege of an uncomfortable journey. The LEZ zones aren’t a bad idea, pretending Glasgow Transport system is efficient and cost effective however, is.
Some of the outraged-at-LEZ tweets are from ppl who have clearly never taken a bus in Glasgow in their puff claiming the city centre is badly served. Almost all the buses go thru the city centre. Wherever you are going, it is likely to be via the city centre.
Also people in the city centre are rarely trying to get a bus into the city centre?? Absolutely we should be trying to reduce pollution in the city centre, but surely making public transport cheaper, better linked up and more frequent would be better than just a punitive charge.
The rhetoric around disability benefits is getting nastier and nastier.
Almost half of people in poverty are disabled. Meanwhile daytime TV paints disabled people as a drain on taxpayers, and questions their right to support.
❌ We can’t let this narrative go unchallenged.
On July 1st, we’ll still be paying 80% more for our energy than in October 2021.
While the price of wholesale natural gas plummets, energy bills remain sky high.
We’re paying for their profits.
Why do these questions even get asked?
If someone is deemed too sick to work then why would anyone think they shouldn't be entitled to some financial support?
Additionally there is no separation for those that are “unemployed” but don’t have to search for work due to caring responsibilities etc, so hardly the “gotcha” the author thinks it is.
Questions: Do the jobs pay well? Would someone be able to live on those wages? Are the hours suitable for parents? Have you factored in the price of childcare, transport etc against the gain in wages? The fact there is 40000 jobs doesn’t matter if those jobs pay poverty wages!
