In the fall of 1984, when he was a new doctoral student at Harvard, Noel Ignatiev submitted an essay for an independent study. Entitled “Present Depths,” the paper surveyed the rapid and cataclysmic changes then taking place across US society.
Articles in other disciplines that have to justify why they're doing history are so good. "Events in human affairs often unfold in temporal sequence (Johnson 1983). Some argue that there exist causal relations that can be understood through retrospective study (Valdez 2013)."
