Hundreds of protesters were detained by Pune Police at Goodluck Chowk today evening as demonstrations against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar spread beyond Delhi.

The protest, announced by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) Pune unit, began around 5 pm, with activists from various organisations joining the demonstration.

Police detained large numbers of protesters as the demonstration continued, amid an escalating crackdown on anti-SIR protests across the country.

Ramit Verma, founder and content creator behind Official PeeingHuman, was detained by the Delhi Police as clashes and a crackdown on protesters continued across Connaught Place, Sansad Marg and areas around Jantar Mantar on Sunday, 11 October.

The detentions come a day after Delhi witnessed a sweeping security crackdown on a planned Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led protest demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

On Saturday, police blocked protesters from reaching Jantar Mantar, detained thousands of people, and imposed extensive restrictions across central Delhi. Opposition leaders, activists, students and content creators were among those detained.

On Sunday, fresh calls for protests were met with continued police restrictions as demonstrators attempted to regroup at different locations across the capital.

The Cockroach Janta Party had called for a protest in Mumbai at 4 pm, but demonstrators were not allowed to assemble near Shivaji Park and were being detained from Dadar station itself.

Some were detained even for walking in the area.

Protesters gathered near Delhi’s RK Ashram Marg Metro Station on Sunday, 11 October, following a call for fresh demonstrations by AISA President Neha Bora amid the ongoing agitation demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Delhi Police detained protesters as they attempted to assemble, with restrictions on gatherings continuing across parts of the capital.

The latest mobilisation follows Saturday’s protests, led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and joined by student groups, activists and opposition leaders. The demonstrations centred on demands for Kumar’s resignation over concerns surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

On Saturday, Delhi Police detained thousands of protesters at multiple locations across the city. AISA national president Neha Bora, activist Yogendra Yadav, advocate Prashant Bhushan and CPI(ML) Liberation general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya were among those detained.

With access to Jantar Mantar restricted, protesters attempted to regroup at alternative locations, including Dilli Haat. Police continued to enforce restrictions on Sunday as fresh demonstrations were called.
