A message to all sane Republicans:

He pardoned 1,600 violent criminals.
You said nothing.

He bulldozed the East Wing.
You said nothing.

He interfered with the release of the Epstein files. You said nothing.

He took over the Kennedy Center and renamed it after himself. You said nothing.

He accepted a $400 million airplane as a personal gift. You said nothing.

He threatened Canada, Cuba, Denmark, Greenland, Venezuela, Colombia, and Brazil. You said nothing.

He tariffed just about everyone but Russia, causing inflation and instability worldwide. You said nothing.

He attacked a nation during mediated negotiations. You said nothing.

His ill-conceived war killed 175 children on day one. You said nothing.

He alienated and insulted our allies. You said nothing.

His ICE Army terrorized and murdered U.S. citizens. You said nothing.

He committed murder on the high seas. You said nothing.

He co-opted the Justice Department and directed it to prosecute his political enemies. You said nothing.

It’s time to start talking.

For Pokrovsk, Avdiivka, Bakhmut, Volnovakha, Popasna, Maryinka, Lysychansk, Vovchansk — and hundreds of towns and villages erased from the map forever.

For freezing Ukrainians in winter and killing energy workers.
For every double tap against first responders.
For murdering doctors, targeting ambulances, bombing hospitals. For Kyiv's Okhmatdyt.
For every civilian bus, car, bike deliberately struck.
For every child abducted.
For every prisoner of war tortured, injured, or killed in captivity.
For every woman, man, and child raped.
For every person buried beneath the rubble of their home.
For every torture chamber under occupation.
For every filtration camp.
For the indoctrination of Ukrainian children.
For looted Ukrainian culture.
For destroying Ukrainian farmland and stealing Ukrainian grain.
For confiscating property under occupation.

For countless other crimes that continue as we speak.

There will be no real peace without justice.

Sie vergrub Flaschen unter einem Apfelbaum. Darin befanden sich 2.500 Gründe, warum die Nazis sie tot sehen wollten.
Ihr Name war Irena Sendler, und im Warschau der 1940er-Jahre traf sie eine Entscheidung, die den Begriff Mut neu definieren sollte: Sie würde jeden Tag in die Hölle gehen und Kinder herausholen.
Offiziell arbeitete sie als Sozialarbeiterin im Warschauer Ghetto und untersuchte dort auf Typhus. In Wirklichkeit organisierte sie eine der waghalsigsten Rettungsaktionen der Geschichte. Das Warschauer Ghetto war nicht nur Armut hinter Stacheldraht – es war ein Todesurteil in Zeitlupe, ein Ort, an dem 400.000 Juden auf engstem Raum zusammengepfercht waren und auf die Deportation nach Treblinka warteten.
Irena konnte nicht alle retten. Aber sie konnte ihre Kinder retten.
Die Fluchten waren erschreckend kreativ. Säuglinge wurden in Werkzeugkisten herausgeschmuggelt, ihre Schreie vom Klirren des Metalls gedämpft. Kleinkinder fuhren in Müllwagen unter Ladungen von verrottendem Müll hindurch. Ältere Kinder gingen durch das Gerichtsgebäude, das Eingänge sowohl zum Ghetto als auch zur „arischen Seite“ hatte. Manche wurden in völliger Dunkelheit durch die Kanalisation geführt, ihre kleinen Hände umklammerten die Hände von Fremden, die flüsterten: „Ihr seid jetzt in Sicherheit.“

Doch Irena verstand etwas Wesentliches: Ein Leben zu retten, war nur die halbe Miete. Diese Kinder verloren alles – ihre Familien, ihre Namen, ihre Identität. Also tat sie etwas Außergewöhnliches. Sie notierte jedes Detail: den wahren jüdischen Namen des Kindes, seine neue falsche Identität, die Namen seiner Eltern. Sie schrieb alles auf winzige Zettel, versiegelte sie in Gläsern und vergrub sie unter einem Apfelbaum im Garten einer Freundin.

Sie hielt ein Versprechen an die Zukunft. Sie sorgte dafür, dass diese Kinder, wenn dieser Albtraum vorbei war, wieder zu sich selbst finden konnten.
Im Oktober 1943 holte die Gestapo sie ab. Sie wussten, dass sie etwas verbarg, aber sie wussten nicht, was. Sie zerschmetterten ihre Beine und Füße und verlangten Namen, Orte, einfach alles. Sie gab ihnen nichts. Schweigen wurde ihr letzter Akt des Widerstands. Sie wurde zum Tode verurteilt.

Doch der polnische Widerstand hatte noch nicht mit ihr abgeschlossen. Am Tag ihrer Hinrichtung bestachen sie einen Wächter. Man ließ sie blutend im Wald zurück, ihr Name wurde der Liste der Hingerichteten hinzugefügt. Offiziell tot, verbrachte sie den Rest des Krieges im Untergrund und rettete unter falscher Identität weitere Leben.

Nach Kriegsende kehrte Irena zu jenem Apfelbaum zurück. Sie grub die Einmachgläser aus. Die Tinte hatte überlebt. Viele der Eltern nicht – die meisten waren in Treblinka umgekommen –, aber diese Namen ermöglichten es Hunderten von Kindern, ihr Erbe, ihre Geschichte, ihre Wahrheit zurückzuerlangen.
Irena Sendler wurde 98 Jahre alt und starb 2008. Wenn man sie eine Heldin nannte, schüttelte sie den Kopf, und eine Traurigkeit, die nie ganz aus ihren Augen wich, ließ sie nicht los. „Ich hätte mehr tun können“, sagte sie. „Dieses Bedauern wird mich bis in den Tod begleiten.“

Doch sie hinterließ uns auch eine Wahrheit, die den Lärm unserer modernen Welt durchdringt:

„Jedes Kind, das ich mit meiner Hilfe retten konnte, rechtfertigt meine Existenz auf dieser Erde, nicht etwa Ruhm.“
Eine Frau. Eine Liste. Flaschen unter einem Baum. Und 2.500 Seelen, die den nächsten Tag erleben durften.
