Burundi and Tanzania have jointly launched the construction of a cross-border standard gauge railway line.
The railway will cover 282 kilometers and cost $2.154 billion.
Once completed, Burundi will have direct access to the Port of Dar es Salaam.
The railway will be crucial in moving Burundi’s minerals for export, and its people to trade in Tanzania.
It is partly funded by the African Development Bank and the government of Tanzania.
The Burundi stretch is funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB).
It will take 6 years to construct the railway.
It will be constructed by the China Railways Engineering Group Limited (CREGC) and the China Railway Engineering Consulting group Co Ltd (CREDC).
The completion of the railway will reduce transportation time and costs, road accidents and road maintenance costs.
