I'm proud to announce that I successfully defended my PhD @ the #UniversityofMinnesota examining the long term effects of adjuvant #radiation in #breastcancer survivors after 20 years of working with these patients - trying to better understand why shoulder problems are common.
Congratulations to Dr. Renata Braudy @RBraudyPT on a successful defense of their project “Postoperative Radiotherapy Breast Cancer Treatment: Musculoskeletal and Functional Implications.”

@denniskeim Definitely a great idea to get skilled PT- and definitely not too late. I’ve treated breast cancer patients & survivors for 20 years- from before surgery to 24 years afterwards… benefits are possible at all stages. Keep up the good work!
Rasmussen and colleagues investigated the effect of resistance training (RT) on pain, maximal strength, and shoulder function in breast cancer survivors (BCS) with persistent pain after treatment. Read their publication here: https://t.co/qA0fvK1Z9J
Can recurrence scores predict which early-stage breast cancer patients need radiation therapy after breast-conserving surgery? A Houston Methodist study is the first to establish radiotherapy treatment guidelines based on the test, previously only used as a chemotherapy guide.
Welcome to the #MCCSymposium! Our BJ Kennedy Keynote speaker Dr. Laura Esserman from @UCSFCancer, @UCSF is presenting now, with a full two days of sharing and learning on the agenda. #umncancer
Thank you for sharing this work for #PTResearchMadness! Braudy's 2021 scholarship to learn more about what will help #breastcancer survivors was made possible through our lead partner @APTAtweets
What is the relationship between shoulder dysfunction and axillary web syndrome (AWS) in #breastcancer survivors? Decreased scapula upward rotation 5 years postoperatively (submitted for publishing) may be to blame. #PTResearchMadness @UMN_PT @MN_Rehab_Biomech #cancerrehab#QOL
Much to ♥️ about this paper!
"PTs provide valuable interventions across the spectrum of cancer care but experience barriers to the delivery and development of services"
Investment in oncology physical therapy is needed to meet these needs!

@drchrysopoulo@DiepFlapBreast@BreastAdvocate Interesting-I appreciate the answer. I have worked with many women over the years and agree that lower grades can respond w/ increased chest wall mobility & some improvement in pliability. Grade 4 however was almost always a PT trial w/subsequent referral back to surgeon.
@notMarkSanchez9 Too true. Same story after surgery +/- radiation for breast cancer, melanoma, etc. Our bodies function as intricate systems… change 1 lever arm and it can impact movement down the chain.
Congratulations to @RBraudyPT on successfully passing her preliminary written exams! Renata is studying the effects of radiation and surgery on shoulder pain, biomechanics, and function to improve QoL in breast cancer survivors.
