Three narrowboats, a very large crane and two enormous horses! 🐴🏗️
Marine consultancy work for Scottish Canals at The Kelpies today, assessing vessels as they were craned out for transport by Horizon.
Not a bad backdrop for a day's work!

Hydrolock! 💥
This severely bent conrod came from a marine diesel engine running when the boat sank.
Water is effectively incompressible, but the momentum of a running engine is considerable. The resulting forces can cause catastrophic damage!

A frosty start surveying this 2003 Bavaria 32 today. ⛵
Some overdue maintenance, but remarkably little osmotic blistering despite reportedly being afloat in freshwater since 2017.
Great to have the prospective purchaser along to explain findings to.

Never judge a narrowboat by its paintwork! ⚓
Surveyed this project boat at Sowerby Bridge. Despite its tired appearance, ultrasonic testing found 9.4mm remaining on the original 10mm baseplate and 5.8mm on the hull sides.
A very pleasant surprise!

A varied week surveying boats: narrowboats in Yorkshire and a Four Winns motor cruiser at Largs.
A Springer narrowboat with well-executed overplating, a fractured engine exhaust, questionable wiring and others.
Never quite know what you'll find when you start looking properly.

Insurance survey today of the classic 47’ McGruer yawl Rinamara.
Clydebuilt in the truest sense, launched from McGruer’s Gareloch yard in 1968, she remains a fine example of Scottish yachtbuilding.

If it burns carbon fuel, there's a risk of CO poisoning.
Install all equipment competently, get it professionally checked routinely. Follow the makers instructions. Badly improvised systems are costing lives.

In this era of climate change and sustainability the UK’s new national flagship should be a versatile, multi-role tall ship. British maritime heritage and a renewed interest in wind driven commercial craft could provide the ideal basis for such a project.

'Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.'
This #WorldBookDay we delight in the suggestion that the #CrinanCanal was the inspiration for the much loved tale of Wind in the Willows 🐸⛵
