The ban on women’s medical education is already having terrible effects, especially on the health of Afghan women and children. The Taliban should lift it immediately.
Afghanistan has the 7th highest maternal mortality rate globally (WHO). On International Day of the Midwife, it’s a powerful reminder: lifting the female medical education ban is essential to saving lives. #UK4Afghanistan
Independent media plays a vital role in society. I have seen for myself the courage and resilience of Afghan journalists in a tough environment. Very pleased to speak to the Afghanistan Journalists Center awards ceremony
Speaking on Monday at the Afghanistan Journalists Center’s annual awards ceremony, Robert Chatterton Dickson, UK Chargé d’Affaires of the UK Mission to Afghanistan, praised the work of Afghan journalists and reaffirmed his government's commitment to supporting Afghan media.
A great opportunity to exchange views on the future of Afghanistan with the former President and his colleagues. 🇬🇧is committed to supporting a secure and prosperous future for the Afghan people
We also discussed the worsening humanitarian crisis, especially in relation to deportations from neighboring countries. I mentioned our concern about the continued detention of 🇬🇧citizens in Afghanistan and the need for consular access
We had a full and frank discussion. I stressed 🇬🇧support for the UN-led Doha Process as a balanced way to reset relations between Afghanistan and the international community. I highlighted the urgent need for girls to be allowed to return to school. 1/2
As another new school year starts in #Afghanistan, 400,000 more girls will be denied education, making a total of 2.2 million. This is a tragedy for them and their country. Education is a right not a privilege. We urge the Taliban to lift the ban. #EducationForAll
Yesterday, our International Law team hosted the 6th #IJSS event "Access to Accountability and Justice for Afghan Women and Girls” with opening words by UN @SR_Afghanistan.
Thank you to our excellent panellists and guests for their contributions to this important discussion.
Pleased to reunite w/ 🇬🇧 Chargé d'Affairs @RCDicksonUK & colleagues in Kabul recently. Discussed shared interests in AFG and appreciated the UK’s recent $13.9M investment in flexible core funding for UNDP - vital amid multiple global crises and complex development challenges.
Great to see Afghanistan’s exiled women’s cricket team have played their first match since fleeing the Taliban in 2021 and I’m glad the FCDO was represented at the match.
We won’t forget Afghan women.
Devastated to see yet another International Day of Education pass Afghan women and girls by.
The Taliban must recognise that Afghanistan’s future can only thrive with the freedom to learn for all its people.
Education is a right, not a privilege. #EducationDay
We had a candid and respectful discussion. I stressed that the reintegration of Afghanistan into the international community would bring great opportunities, but need to be based on changes to human rights and governance as set out in the UN Independent Assessment and UNSCR 2721
@ARG_1880 We had a frank and respectful discussion. I stressed that Afghanistan’s reintegration into the international community would bring great opportunities, but need real change in human rights, especially for women, as set out in the UN Independent Assessment and UNSCR 2721
Defending Afghan women and girls’ rights is one of our top priorities.
That’s why I brought together key individuals and the UN to discuss how we ensure what we are doing is in the best interest of all Afghans.
Women and girls are facing brutal discrimination in Afghanistan at the hands of the Taliban.
Working with international partners we will support action to hold the those responsible to account.
