The Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) has over 18,000 Fellows and members worldwide representing the disciplines of clinical oncology and clinical radiology.
Patients' conditions are worsening as a direct result of shortages of radiologists and oncologists.
Alarm bells should be ringing. Without action to train, recruit and retain more doctors, more patients will suffer as demand rises.

Good discussion with NI Health Minister @mikenesbittni and Department of Health colleagues on tackling radiologist and oncologist shortages, the radiotherapy services review, and the role of training, innovation and AI in improving patient care across Northern Ireland.
@DrStephenHarden and RCR Scottish chair Dr Judith Anderson were pleased to meet the @SP_HSCS Committee Convenor this week. We discussed our 2025 workforce data, education & training, the future of cancer and imaging services, and expanding access to thrombectomy across Scotland.

Congratulations @YvetteCooperMP on being appointed Health Secretary. We look forward to working with you to deliver the National Cancer Plan, tackle diagnostic waiting lists and support our members and Fellows to continue delivering high quality patient care.
It’s a real honour to be appointed Health Secretary by Andy Burnham - 27 years after I worked on the first NHS Cancer Plan as a junior health minister.
I’m looking forward to working urgently to improve maternity services, to take forward plans for social care, and to once again play a part in supporting our National Health Service, Labour’s proudest achievement.
Most of all I’m looking forward to working with the dedicated NHS staff, carers, healthcare professionals and volunteers on whom we all depend.
In leaving the FCDO, let me pay tribute to the brilliant diplomats and ministers I worked with at the Foreign Office, and to my fellow foreign ministers from across the world - for all the work we did together to support Ukraine, to recognise the State of Palestine, to keep the spotlight on Sudan and to treat violence against women and girls as the global crisis it is. The partnerships we build abroad make us stronger at home.
We welcome the news that @WelshGovernment is developing a 10 Year Cancer Strategy for Wales. We look forward to working closely with @mabonapgwynfor@WGHealthandCare to ensure it delivers for patients and the clinicians who care for them.

Grateful to Safa Elhassan MS for raising cancer workforce pressures with the First Minister of Wales, citing RCR workforce census data.
A positive response from @RhunapIorwerth on his plans to tackle these pressures through the forthcoming cancer and NHS workforce plans.
We're proud to share highlights from the recent @RCRadiologists Global AI Conference! ⭐️
Firstly, we were pleased to see Dr Joe Barnett, Senior AI Adviser to HLH, highlight that safe AI adoption depends on understanding human-AI interaction. 👏
Reminder of our first story of the week:
The NHS is failing to capitalise on some of AI’s biggest productivity benefits by underusing the technology for administrative tasks, new workforce census data from the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) reveals.

The CAR is attending the opening talk at the RCR Global AI conference in London. 💻
Dr. Stephen Harden, @RCRadiologists President, on stage. Lots of support for clinician-led AI validation and surveillance.
Brilliant debate at the RCR Global AI conference watching my friend @MackayKatherine making the case that manual contouring won’t become obsolete in the AI era.. #RCRGlobalAI@RCRadiologists
Great to speak at the @RCRadiologists Global AI Conference about how we are making the NHS the most AI-enabled health system in the world.
Radiologists are already using AI to help catch cancers earlier and our 10 Year Health Plan will ensure more patients get treated faster.
At #RCRGlobalAI conference, Health Innovation & Safety Minister @PreetKGillMP delivered a clear message to delegates: if proven tools are placed in safe hands, the prize will be faster diagnosis, earlier treatment & "more time for the human care that no machine can ever replace".
We’re bringing #ACRDSI’s AI quality framework to the global stage. 🌎
