Interesting contrast between the personal doctrinal and the personal physical Christ

@REBookClub They're obsessed with this on Kermode&Mayo's film review podcast, and it's been used in a few films - suggests it is one of her greatest legacies! There is a level of personal emotion in her writing, she conjures up a physical, personal image of the Christ - pretty remarkable!

@RE_McGEE And whether she thought she would be talked about all these years later. I liked how she spoke of her self as a simple character. And yet her ideas could be written for today!

@REBookClub I loved that the writings of an unknown medieval woman locked in a room in Norwich could feel so relevant & powerful today. I am not a Christian but those few words made me feel quite emotional. I like the idea of theology having meaning & impact in the wider world. #REBookClub

I think this leads nicely onto Q3: Julian of Norwich – a theologian of her time, or before her time?

Do you think there is a risk we will read too much into her theology?

@JPaddy @RE_McGEE @REBookClub Yes - hell and purgatory being much more physical places of real experience - I imagine at the time (political and social upheaval, Black Death etc) the veil between hell and this world felt thinner

@RE_McGEE @JPaddy @REBookClub I think that hits the nail on the head. The same reason Augustine can't abide penal substitution: God IS love itself. How can there be anger and wrath there?

@Ms_AtkinsRE @JPaddy @REBookClub I had a similar thought @Ms_AtkinsRE which again is why reading original texts is important. Is she saying that my experience of God's love is so overwhelming that I can't imagine him not saving everyone - which is different from everyone will be saved. #ReBookClub

@REBookClub I think her status as an anchoress probably helped? But also what WASN'T in danger of being heresy at the time? 😂Makes me think of Abelard again like you said @RE_McGEE

@JPaddy @REBookClub I just know as a keen Pope Francis observer that sometimes he says things that when you take a sentence or two out of a longer piece of text that he is sometimes misrepresented - often by people who want him to be more liberal than he is. #REBookClub

@JPaddy @REBookClub The universalism is a challenge, I would like to read the original text to see how she phrases that and the context. I read that part and was having a "What would Pope Francis say?" moment. The universalism would work for many Christians today though - I think? #REBookClub

@REBookClub A helpful study of her is working out exactly what makes her radical I think - as in what is shocking about what she produced given her context, but also the doors she opened for later thinking through her writing. That helps us read her forward and backward of that makes sense

@Ms_AtkinsRE Do you think the fact that she wasn't published holds us back from knowing if she was truly radical? i.e. would some people have listened to her? Or would she have been seen as a heretic?

@REBookClub Although I am a lover of context I think that as long as you are not subverting the message of love and faith - I don't think you can read too much into her theology. Especially if you acknowledge what you are bringing to her text. #ReBookClub
