"Sledgehammer" is Peter Gabriel's biggest solo hit and his only #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The groundbreaking music video, directed by Stephen R. Johnsonwith animation by Aardman (later famous for Wallace & Gromit).

To create the iconic effects, Peter Gabriel spent around 16 hours lying beneath a sheet of glass while animators moved objects frame by frame, with the shoot taking nearly a week to complete. The video won a record nine awards at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards, including Video of the Year, and remains the most-played music video in MTV history.

Let's teleport back 42 years...

Boulder Dash was an action-puzzle game released in 1984 by First Star Software. You play as Rockford, a miner, digging through dirt to collect diamonds while racing against a time limit. Sounds simple? Well, it wasn't.

The genius lies in the realistic physics: boulders (and other objects) stay put until you remove the dirt beneath them, at which point they fall, potentially crushing you or enemies. You must strategically dig paths, drop rocks to kill enemies or create new diamonds, and reach the exit without getting squished.

The game's title was a pun on "balderdash" (meaning nonsense). In 2011, Boulder Dash was included in the Smithsonian's "The Art of Video Games" exhibition.

It's one of those rare timeless gems, maybe not quite on the same level as Lode Runner or Pac Man, but I'm sure that you played Boulder Dash if you were a gamer in the 80s.

43 years ago today, one of the best early multiplayer games ever was released: M.U.L.E.

Most games in the 80s were single-player experiences. Some offered a two-player option.

M.U.L.E. was the earliest to introduce a true four-player option. The auction system was brilliant, and so was the bidding for each plot of land. Very basic principles of supply and demand, beautifully packed into a game. It was also a great example of blending real-time and turn-based gracefully, getting the best out of both styles.

I still consider it one of the best games of that early to mid 80s era. Ozark Softscape created some wonderful games; one of the true pioneers of the 8-bit era.

The heart and soul behind Ozark Softscape was always Danielle Berry Bunten Berry, and she always put a strong emphasis on the importance of a multiplayer option, quote: "No one ever said on their deathbed: Gee, I wish I had spent more time alone with my computer." - I am sure everyone agrees that playing against your friends is infinitely more fun than against the computer.
