A Serious Concern: Rising Male Deaths in Tamil Nadu
In 2025, Tamil Nadu recorded 1.1 lakh more male deaths than female deaths. Road accidents, alcohol and suicides need urgent attention. Government action can save many lives.

Scool Education Department - Timely transfers for better administration
The new government has completed four months in office. Normally, transfers of government officials take place soon after a new government assumes charge, especially in the School Education Department.
Transfers of Directors, Joint Directors, CEOs, DEOs and other field level education officials are a normal administrative process. It helps bring a fresh team and maintain a proper distance between officials and local political or other local influences.
The Education Department may now focus on completing transfers and promotions of officials. Many officers are also waiting for promotion. Timely transfers and promotions will help the department work with more efficiency.

Can the new TVK government focus on filling BRTE Posts?
Tamil Nadu has around 3,700 sanctioned BRTE posts, but more than 800 of them are vacant. BRTEs play an important role in school education. They visit schools, train teachers in new textbooks and modern teaching methods, and support the effective use of libraries and teaching-learning materials.
They also help bring dropout children back to school and provide academic support to teachers.
The new government should take immediate steps to fill the vacant posts and strengthen this important academic support system by appointing candidates already selected through the competitive examination conducted by the TRB in 2024.

Can we avoid selective criticism in politics ?
Political parties may disagree with the Election Commission or question its decisions. If there are mistakes in electoral rolls, SIR or any election process, there are democratic, legal and constitutional ways to raise them.
When parties win elections, they seem happy, calm and satisfied with the process. But when they lose, they often become aggrieved and put the blame on the Election Commission. This kind of double standard is unacceptable.
India is the world’s largest democracy. The Election Commission and other constitutional institutions must be protected and strengthened. The Opposition has an important responsibility in this regard.
People are watching everything closely. Democracy demands responsibility, not selective criticism.

A Welcome step to protect RTI
The Tamil Nadu Government has withdrawn the recent GO exempting the Public (Law and Order) Department from the RTI Act, following strong objections from political leaders and social activists.
The decision to withdraw the GO is welcome. Even when a Government Order is issued with a good intention, such exemptions can become a two edged weapon and may be misused in the future.
RTI is an important tool in the hands of citizens and a vital part of democratic accountability. Therefore, the Government must exercise great caution before issuing any order that may restrict access to information.

Congratulations TN Police
Head Constable Velmurugan of Coimbatore Police deserves special appreciation for his extraordinary courage. He reportedly risked his life by staying on the roof of a fleeing car carrying around 300 kg of gutka for nearly 40 km, until the police team intercepted it.
Such courage and commitment deserve recognition. The Tamil Nadu Government should honour him with due recognition. This will inspire young police personnel to serve with greater courage and dedication.

Can TN Government focus on upgrading Annamalai University?
Annamalai University was founded by Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar in 1929. It is one of the oldest and most historic universities in Tamilnadu. The university is spread over nearly 1,500 acres. It has 10 faculties and 49 departments. At one time, it had more than 17,000 students on campus.
The Government of Tamil Nadu took over the university in 2013. At present, the university has lost some of its charm and importance. The large campus is not very lively because there are fewer students. Many hostel and academic buildings are not being used.
At this point, why can’t TN government focus on Annamalai University upgrading as a Global Model University with a greater vision?
This can be done by building strong academic and research partnerships with world class universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard and other leading institutions.
Therefore, the Tamilnadu Government may seriously focus on upgrading Annamalai University and transforming it into an icon of TN.

Respecting women is also a form of education.
Political differences are natural in a democracy. But trolling Chennai Hon'ble Mayor Priya for her food choices, dressing, hairstyle or personal preferences is unacceptable.
Women deserve respect and dignity. Personal choices should never become a reason for ridicule or humiliation.
Youngsters, in particular, should learn to disagree with ideas but always respect the person.

What a great person -
Dr Manmohan Singh
On his birth anniversary, I remember Dr. Manmohan Singh, a calm, simple and dignified leader, and a world renowned economist.
As Finance Minister in 1991, he played a key role in India’s economic reforms and laid an important foundation for modern economic growth.
A great economist, a distinguished Prime Minister and a person of integrity. His service to India will always be remembered.

Youth voice or larger political game?
Abhijit Dipke’s first protest on NEET and examination issues looked somewhat reasonable, as it raised genuine concerns of students and youth. His protest also attracted many young people.
But now he is demanding the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner and threatening a nationwide protest, without establishing clear proof of election manipulation.
The Election Commission’s voter list reforms may have some mistakes, but such issues can be corrected through proper legal and democratic processes. In my experience, the Special Intensive Revision has played an important role in preparing a clean and reliable voters list in Tamil Nadu during recent elections.
My concern is whether Dipke is acting purely on his own conviction, or whether wider political or external interests are influencing his movement.
Youth participation in democracy is welcome. But protecting the unity, democratic institutions and constitutional process of India is equally important.

Post Office as a Common Citizen Service Point
Why not use the Post Office as a common nodal point for important citizen services such as Aadhaar, PAN, voter list verification and ration card services?
The Post Office has a unique advantage. Every postman covers a fixed local area and regularly reaches households. Almost every house is connected to the postal network.
Therefore, postmen can provide useful first hand information about whether a person is living at an address, whether the address is genuine, or whether a person has shifted or is no longer residing there.
This network can be especially useful during Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, as a supporting mechanism for house-to-house verification.
Using the Post Office in this way can make government services more accessible, reduce duplication and improve the accuracy of citizen records, while the statutory responsibility of each department remains unchanged.

Has SIR worked well in TN?
Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Tamil Nadu has been a significant and useful electoral roll cleaning exercise. It has helped identify and remove large numbers of deceased, shifted, absent and multiple enrolment entries, making the electoral rolls more accurate and reliable.
The Supreme Court has also upheld the Election Commission’s power to conduct SIR, and in July 2026, proceedings on 13 petitions challenging the Tamil Nadu SIR were closed.
SIR should continue periodically in the future. At the same time, the Election Commission should ensure a simple and quick process to restore the names of genuine voters who may have been removed by mistake. Every eligible citizen must have an easy opportunity to correct or restore their name. Clean and accurate electoral rolls are essential for free and fair elections.

Building a Research Mindset in TN Schools
Tamilnadu should not remain merely a manufacturing state. We must think, innovate, design and create our own products and technologies to achieve faster economic growth and become one of the global icons.
The foundation must begin at the school level.
Schools across Tamilnadu should develop scientific temper, curiosity, creativity and a research mindset. Children should be encouraged to question, experiment, solve problems and create new ideas, in addition to preparing examinations.
A strong research mindset can be developed by introducing students to project based learning, practical experiments, problem solving activities and real world challenges. Teachers should encourage students to ask questions, explore different solutions and learn from failure.
Regular science fairs, innovation competitions, research projects and interactions with scientists can inspire children to take up research in areas such as space, medicine, automobiles, agriculture, AI and emerging technologies. Schools can also provide laboratories and opportunities for students to present and develop their ideas.
Planting the seeds of innovation and research in schools today will build TN's innovators, researchers and product creators of tomorrow.

Daily Reading Time – Building a Knowledgeable Society
Tamil Nadu has already undertaken various initiatives to promote reading among children, including the “Puthaga Poongothu” initiative and the “Vasippu Iyakkam”. However, the availability of books and reading initiatives alone may not be sufficient. The time available for children to actually read regularly remains a key challenge. A simple suggestion is to provide dedicated daily reading time to make these initiatives more effective.
Every school may provide 20 minutes of Daily Reading Time to all children within the existing school hours. Age-appropriate books can be made available, allowing children to choose according to their interests. If there are eight periods a day, saving just 2–3 minutes from each period can create the required 20 minutes, without extending school hours. During these 20 minutes, teachers should ensure that all children are actually engaged in reading.
To motivate children further, schools may consider certificates, stars, medals or prizes for regular and outstanding readers, with recognition at the school, district and State levels.

Does experience matter in governance?
With the rainy season approaching, Tamil Nadu needs strong planning for rainwater management, drainage, roads and flood prevention. In my view, the experience of senior retired administrators can also be valuable in such situations.
As a student of St. Joseph’s College, Trichy, I had my early association with the city. Later, when I served as a Training DEO in Trichy, I closely observed the committed service of Mr. Swaran Singh IAS (Retd.) during his tenure as Commissioner of Trichy Corporation.
I was impressed by his administrative efficiency, integrity and ability to handle urban issues with foresight. His later experience as Chairman of the TWAD Board, along with his work in rural and urban development, is particularly relevant to today’s water and drainage challenges.
Wherever appropriate, the Government could consider utilising the experience of such senior administrators in an advisory capacity.
Experience matters in governance.

Mission Olympics 2036: Start from the School
TN's initiative to develop Olympic level sports infrastructure is a welcome step. Hon'ble Sports Minister Aadhav Arjuna deserves appreciation for his keen interest and active support for sports development.
But Olympic champions must be identified from the school level itself.
At present, schools largely focus on academics, while sports are often given less importance. So, Principals, teachers, parents and other stakeholders should be given proper awareness, motivation and guidance to give equal importance to sports and encourage every child to participate.
Scientific sports battery tests should normally be conducted in all schools in Tamil Nadu every year for children aged 8–18. At present, the sports battery test system is not fully functional in all schools. The School Education Director should focus on making it fully functional.
One Joint Director in the School Education Department should be appointed exclusively for sports and should coordinate closely with Olympic Mission Authority.
Children with talent should be given proper coaching, encouragement, nutrition and opportunities at block, district and State levels. Residential training programmes should also be conducted at stadiums to develop talented students. Hon'ble Minister already has a detailed program in this regard.
Build the stadiums and build the talent pipeline—from every Tamil Nadu school to the Olympic podium. Let us all work together in different dimensions to achieve Olympic medals in 2036. This will be a great pride for Tamil Nadu.
