25 जनवरी 1994 भारतीय सेना के एक यंग कैप्टन को नागालैंड के लोंगडी परभन क्षेत्र में एक अभियान को नेतृत्व करने की जिम्मेदारी सौंपी गई....

खुफिया सूचना मिली थी कि उग्रवादी संगठन NSCN IM के चार सदस्य एक पुल और संचार टॉवर को नष्ट करने की योजना बना रहे हैं,जो सेना के कान्वे का जरूरी रास्ता था...उस यंग कैप्टेन और उनकी टुकड़ी ने उस घर को चारों ओर से घेर लिया जहाँ उग्रवादी छिपे हुए थे..

कई बार आत्मसमर्पण की चेतावनी देने के बावजूद जब दरवाजा नहीं खुला, तो कैप्टेन साहब स्वयं दरवाजा तोड़कर भीतर घुसे...पर जैसे ही वे अंदर पहुँचे, उग्रवादियों ने AK47 से अंधाधुंध गोलीबारी शुरू कर दी, लगभग डेढ़ घंटे तक भीषण मुठभेड़ चलती रही...

इस दौरान गोली लगने से कैप्टेन साहब गंभीर रूप से घायल हो गए... उनके हाथ में तीन गोलियाँ लगीं, एक गोली उनकी छाती में धँस गई और बम विस्फोट में उनका दाहिना पैर बुरी तरह क्षतिग्रस्त हो गया... फिर भी वे अपनी टीम का नेतृत्व करते रहे...

भारतीय सेना मुख्यालय को उनके घायल होने की सूचना मिल चुकी थी और उन्हें तत्काल अस्पताल पहुँचाने के लिए हेलीकॉप्टर भेजा गया.. इसी बीच मुठभेड़ समाप्त हुई, एक उग्रवादी मारा गया और बाकी ने आत्मसमर्पण कर दिया...

लेकिन तभी एक अप्रत्याशित दृश्य सामने आया... आत्मसमर्पण कर रहे उग्रवादियों के पीछे से दो घायल बच्चे बाहर आए जो उस घर में उग्रवादियों द्वारा बंद करके रखे गए थे...एक छह वर्षीय लड़का, जिसके पैर में गोली लगी थी और एक तेरह वर्षीय लड़की, जिसके पेट में गोली लगी थी... दोनों भाई-बहन थे और उनकी हालत बेहद गंभीर थी....

सबसे नज़दीकी अस्पताल छह घंटे की दूरी पर था, यदि उन्हें तुरंत चिकित्सा सहायता नहीं मिलती, तो उनका बचना लगभग असंभव था...

हेलीकॉप्टर उस कप्तान को ले जाने के लिए तैयार खड़ा था,पर उस यंग कैप्टेन के सामने दो विकल्प थे अपना जीवन बचाना या उन बच्चों का जीवन बचाना...

तब कैप्टेन साहब को भारतीय सेना के प्रशिक्षण का एक वाक्य याद आया कि
हमारे हथियार दुश्मनों को मारने के लिए हैं, अपने लोगों को नहीं...

उन्होंने निर्णय लिया कि पहले बच्चों को सुरक्षित स्थान पर पहुँचाया जाएगा... हेलीकॉप्टर के पायलट, जो संयोग से उनका मित्र भी था, उनसे कहा कि
भाई ,महान बनने की कोशिश मत करो, अगर तुम्हें कुछ हो गया तो मैं तुम्हारी माँ को क्या जवाब दूँगा?

तब कैप्टेन पिल्लै ने शांत स्वर में उत्तर दिया कि बस इतना कह देना कि आपके बेटे ने दो बच्चों की जान बचाई,अपनी जगह ....

उन यंग कैप्टेन की जिद्द और आदेश का पालन किया गया... दोनों बच्चों को पहले सुरक्षित स्थान पहुँचाया गया और फिर इंफाल के रीजनल इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ मेडिकल साइंसेज भेजा गया....

लगभग दो घंटे बाद दूसरा हेलीकॉप्टर उस कप्तान को लेने आया,तब तक वे खून से लथपथ पड़े हुए थे... उन्हें पता था कि शायद वे जीवित न बचें, लेकिन यह संतोष अवश्य था कि उन्होंने अपना कर्तव्य निभाया है... ये तस्वीर तभी की है....

उनकी अद्वितीय वीरता और मानवीय साहस के लिए उन्हें भारत के शांतिकालीन सर्वोच्च वीरता सम्मानों में से एक, शौर्य चक्र से सम्मानित किया गया और उस यंग कैप्टन लड़के का नाम था दिवाकरन पद्म कुमार पिल्ले ....

लेकिन कहानी यहीं समाप्त नहीं होती,अब शुरू होती है....

सोलह वर्ष बाद न तो कप्तान पिल्लै कर्नल बन चुके थे...पर उनको यह नही पता था कि वे बच्चे कहाँ हैं, और न ही उन बच्चों को यह मालूम था कि उनका जीवन बचाने वाला सैनिक कौन था...

बाद में कर्नल पिल्लै ने उस गाँव से संपर्क स्थापित किया और स्वयं वहाँ पहुँचे... जिस सैनिक ने अपने प्राणों की परवाह किए बिना गाँव के बच्चों को बचाया था, उसके स्वागत के लिए पूरा गाँव उमड़ पड़ा...

गाँव की जनजाति ने उन्हें अपने समुदाय का सदस्य घोषित किया और उन्हें पिल्लै पामेई की उपाधि दी.

यहां तक ग्रामीणों ने मिलकर उन्हें 100 एकड़ भूमि भेंट करने की भी पेशकश की, लेकिन कर्नल पिल्लै ने विनम्रतापूर्वक उसे अस्वीकार कर दिया...

इसके बजाय उन्होंने गाँव के विकास का संकल्प लिया, उनके प्रयासों से क्षेत्र में सड़क निर्माण परियोजना को मंजूरी मिली और वर्षों से कटे हुए उस इलाके को बेहतर संपर्क सुविधा प्राप्त हुई...

जिस छह वर्षीय बालक का उन्होंने जीवन बचाया था, वह आगे चलकर पढ़-लिखकर बैंक में नौकरी करने लगा। वर्ष 2021 में उसका विवाह हुआ....पर कर्नल पिल्लै ने उसके विवाह की तस्वीरें साझा करते हुए उसमें शामिल न हो पाने का अफसोस भी व्यक्त भी किया,क्योंकि सारा गांव उनको याद कर रहा था...

ये कितना सुखांत सच है एक सैनिक की वीरता की वजह से एक गांव की बदलती किस्मत का...
