Discipline is what carries you across the distance that motivation never could. In the end, achievement rarely belongs to the most excited player, it belongs to the one who stayed consistent long after the feeling disappeared.
Anyone can train hard when they feel inspired, rested, and confident. The separation happens on the days when nobody is watching, your energy is low, and you still choose to honour the standard you set for yourself.
When players are said to read three passes ahead of the game, it is because they can see patterns of play emerging. The scheme a side plays in will reveal its passing options and progression, allowing a player to anticipate what is about to him before it happens.
There are ten schemes played at the highest level of the game, which can be shortened into five when you recognise that there are back three and back four variations of the same approach. In learning how to play in each scheme and recognising its patterns, you can also recognise these in opponents. It becomes possible to know where space will open on the pitch even before the game kicks off.
Schemes are a more advanced approach to viewing formations, hence why you will see many of the same names. The 4-3-3 scheme is the most common in the modern game. Unlike in other schemes, the central midfielders are the primary attackers of the half-spaces and areas between the lines, rather than the wide forwards or any out-and-out attacking midfielder. The 4-3-3 scheme’s strength lies in its ability to create geometric shapes, passing angles and overloads all across the pitch.
Some schemes are better suited to playstyles than others. When there are options, part of deciding the next team to play for is knowing their scheme and if they will continue to play that way. Is it a part of the club ethos? Will it remain through manager changes? A good example is Bodo/Glimt who use a 4-3-3, have kept the same manager for years and therefore encourage the same approach from their players. It is easy for us to recognise if our player will succeed at the club or not before signing.
