(cw: internalized ableism) shane is not happy when he’s told he might have autism. it happens later in life, after he joins the centaurs and starts seeing a therapist of his own. +
this is maybe a little ooc but there’s only so much u can fit in a twitter thread and i am nothing if not someone who projects onto shane hollander <3
in stories of “high functioning” people with autism, who are independent and successful despite what they struggle with. and he sees, startlingly, as they research how autism is best accommodated, that ilya has already been doing it this whole time. +
shane sinks into ilya’s side. he’s feeling a little overwhelmed, but in a way that had him feeling fuzzy from the inside out.
“i love you,” shane murmurs, as his eyes began to droop and his body finally begins to relax.
“i love you, too, shane. always.”
he learns that his impression of autism wasn’t entirely accurate, and that maybe he doesn’t fit every single trait online, but he does see himself reflected in their research. +
and so ilya coaxes shane back to bed, pulling up google on his phone once they’re curled under the covers. they compare shane’s own experiences and what his therapist said with what they find online. +
the love he had for ilya was overwhelming, and he could feel it building, cresting, surfacing, until he was blinking back tears.
“i just never thought it could be me,” he admits.
“maybe we can learn more about it together? you can tell me what your therapist said.” +
i have never doubted that and i never will. this is not a new thing you suddenly have. just a word for things you’ve experienced all your life. you are still my same shane.”
shane felt vaguely sick for a different reason. +
but it is how your brain functions that requires some specific things, and it is something that is not your fault. like my depression.” ilya brushes some of shane’s hair back from his forehead. “i know you are not weak. i have seen it myself all these years. +
“but with all the things she told me, like… ‘accommodations’ and shit, it just made me sound weak—“
“do you think i am weak because of my depression?”
“jesus, ilya, no. but that’s not the same.”
“maybe not exactly. +
be taking care of me any different?” ilya finally asks.
“no.”
“no. you wouldn’t. if anything, knowing it is depression makes it easier. we have more tools to handle it that way, yes?”
shane glances down. +
shane just stares at him, picking apart his gaze for any underlying hesitance. ilya gnaws at his bottom lip, brain obviously working on something.
“let’s say therapist never told me i had depression. i would still have the bad days i have now. would you treat me any different? +
