To conclude this is a cult at work is too simple.
Trump isn't dragging a cult around.
He just happens to speak for the part of America that is hateful, racist and selfish. If ignorance is a cult he joined theirs. Despicable ill mannered children who are frightened by kindness and empathy.
Here is the bad news. They are never going away. The wealthy have adopted them for their own selfish purposes.

I have no problem sharing hard truths with my own party, and our immigration system is a prime example of government not working for people. I'm a border security Democrat. I believe we've got to have a sane, orderly process to ensure that we know who's coming into our country.

Public safety is the most important thing the government does. More important than public education, more important than public health — nothing matters if we're not keeping people safe.
