"As long as there is no accountability, violations will continue. I do think member states should step in and do their part in preventing this massive scale of IHL and human rights violations in the Occupied Palestinian Territory."
Ajith Sunghay, UN Human Rights Head of Office, Occupied Palestinian Territory

.@OHCHR_Palestine is concerned by renewed airstrikes in the West Bank. The use of airstrikes in the occupied West Bank is unlawful.
The situation in the West Bank does not amount to hostilities between parties to an armed conflict. Therefore, operations by Israeli security forces are governed by international human rights norms and standards applicable to law enforcement officials. In this context this means:
1.The use of weapons and tactics developed for the conduct of warfare, such as airstrikes, is inconsistent with the standards of international human rights law applicable to civilian law enforcement.
2.Israeli security forces’ use of firearms and similarly lethal weapons must be restricted to situations where as a last resort it is strictly necessary for protection against an imminent threat of death or serious injury.
3.Extrajudicial executions, regardless of the target, are unlawful at all times.

#Gaza: Attacks & threats against those trying to deliver aid to & support the hundreds of thousands of people who are suffering famine & starvation defy belief.
There must be an independent, impartial & thorough investigation into the reported attacks and harassment by drones & other objects against the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla. Such attacks must stop, & those responsible for violations must be held to account.
As the occupying power, Israel must ensure food & medical supplies for the population to the fullest extent of the means available, or to agree to & facilitate impartial humanitarian relief schemes, delivered rapidly & without hindrance. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights @volker_turk calls on Israel to urgently lift the blockade on Gaza & allow the entry of life-saving material through all means possible.

Today is the deadline set last year for Israel by the UN General Assembly to comply with the @CIJ_ICJ Advisory Opinion and end its unlawful continued presence in the Palestinian territory. Instead, we are witnessing more carnage, destruction of infrastructure, forcible displacement of Palestinians and consolidation of annexation. States should act now to end violations of international human rights and humanitarian law, and pressure Israel to immediately and fully withdraw from the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
The Israeli strikes on internally displaced persons, including as they try to leave Gaza city or seek shelter near hospitals, show the Israeli military's blatant disregard for the fundamental principle of distinction. Israel has demanded that Palestinian civilians leave Gaza city, they must take constant care to spare civilians from attack whether they leave or stay. The Israeli military must comply with the IHL requirement to distinguish between civilians and combatants.

20 years ago at the @UN General Assembly, States recognised their shared responsibility to protect people from war crimes, crimes against humanity, & genocide.
States need to uphold this collective duty & ensure respect for international law.

#Gaza: Sanctions by the #US Government on 3 prominent Palestinian human rights groups are completely unacceptable and should be withdrawn, says @volker_turk.
For decades, these NGOs have been performing vital human rights work, particularly on accountability for human rights violations. These sanctions will have a chilling effect on civil society in the occupied Palestinian territory & Israel, and potentially globally.

Against the backdrop of Israel’s stated intention to completely take over Gaza City, the Israeli military’s announcement that it now considers Gaza City a 'dangerous combat zone' is highly alarming. Around 1 million people are in Gaza City – some trapped by ongoing Israeli military operations, others with nowhere to go. Palestinians have already been under constant attack by the Israeli military, and now face an even worsening situation. Israel must take urgent measures to protect all civilians, including those in Gaza City.
Civilians need protection. We are doing everything we can for the people of Gaza, in these very difficult circumstances. With your support, we can do more: https://t.co/ddHO080hxX
In the occupied West Bank, 982 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces & settlers since October 2023 alone, and over 42,000 forcibly displaced by operations, home demolitions & settler attacks.
This weekend’s violence in Al Mughayyir is yet another example of the ongoing oppression of and coercion against Palestinians. All such violence must stop and impartial accountability ensured - @volker_turk
#Gaza: At least 247 Palestinian journalists have been killed since 7 Oct 2023.
The killing of journalists should shock the world, not into stunned silence, but into action, demanding accountability & justice.
Famine declared by IPC in #Gaza Governorate is a direct result of actions by #Israel's Government that has unlawfully restricted entry & distribution of humanitarian aid.
It is a war crime to use starvation as a method of warfare, and the resulting deaths may also amount to a war crime - @volker_turk
