Akbayan Party today slammed Senator Robin Padilla’s push to lower the age of criminal responsibility from 15 to 10 in the wake of the Tacloban school shooting, accusing him of exploiting a tragedy to advance a misguided proposal.

“Gusto ni Robin ikulong ang mga 10-year-old, pero ang 64-year-old na si Bato dela Rosa na akusadong mass murderer ay pinatakas niya. Preso para sa mga bata, pero takas para kay Bato? Anong klaseng pag-iisip yan?” David said.

David said that jailing children who are too young and who cannot fully grasp right from wrong is not rehabilitation. “Eh si Robin nga, nasa hustong gulang at pag-iisip noong nakulong, nagbago ba? Hindi ba’t nilabag na naman niya ang batas sa pagtulong kay Bato na tumakas? How much more children, whose minds are still developing?”

Akbayan stressed that Padilla’s proposal rests on a false premise. “Nabasa na ba ni Robin ang batas? The Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act holds minors who commit crimes, especially heinous ones, accountable. In fact, minors aged 15 and above may be held criminally liable if proven to have acted with discernment, while those below 15 can be deprived of liberty as they undergo intensive intervention and rehabilitation programs,” David said.

Akbayan said it stands with victims and their families, but warned against exploiting public grief to justify draconian policies that could make schools and communities more unsafe. “We are one with the call for justice and accountability. At the same time, we push for the full funding and implementation of the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act so effective intervention, mental health support, quality education, and social services are in place. Children must also be kept away from dangerous weapons such as firearms, and parents must be held equally accountable for ensuring proper care and supervision, to prevent violence before it happens.” David said.

A SUCCESSFUL EXPEDITION OF SHARED HISTORY 🚣‍♂️

The Provincial Government of Batanes thanked the Tao people of Lanyu, Taiwan for their efforts to visit to Batanes via their boat, reliving the voyage that their ancestors took.

The group also entrusted the Cinedkeran boat which they used to the people of Batanes, in the hope that the Ivatan people would make a visit to Lanyu in 2027.

"Dios mamahes, Lanyu. May the seas be calm and may our paths cross again soon," the provincial government said.

LENI SPEAKS AT LEGAZPI GRAD

Former vice president and now Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo shared on Facebook on Tuesday, June 16, that she served as commencement speaker at the Bicol University Main Campus graduation in Legazpi City.

Robredo said she had to decline several graduation invitations outside Naga this year, noting she prefers to limit travel and focus on her duties in the city.

She added that Bicol University remains closely linked to her family and public service journey, citing her late husband, former Naga City mayor Jesse Robredo, who once taught at the institution on weekends. She also recalled the university’s partnership with Angat Buhay during the BAHAYANIHAN project in Guinobatan, which helped build 100 homes for families displaced by lahar.
