We are running a massive online open course on AMR databases starting end of the month. Its completely free, study at your own pace and its ~15 hours overall over the 3 weeks (although you can finish any time in a year). Please spread in your networks! https://t.co/n6LU8VDeTw
I put together a somewhat extensive course for intro to pathogen genomics analysis, which I trialed here in Kigali these past 2 weeks. Please share with anyone you think may benefit from it.

A mini-🧵overview of its content:
Moomin, the beloved 1990s show, captured the hearts of audiences with its enchanting tales and whimsical characters. Based on the Swedish-Finnish comic strip by Tove Jansson, the animated series transported viewers to the magical world of Moominvalley. The show followed the adventures of the Moomin family, led by Moominmamma and Moominpappa, alongside their curious and kind-hearted son, Moomintroll. Together with their friends, such as Snufkin, Snork Maiden, and Little My, they embarked on imaginative journeys, encountering fantastical creatures and overcoming various challenges. Moomin exuded a timeless charm, blending gentle life lessons with a sense of wonder, making it a treasured show that continues to captivate audiences to this day.
@AdamMGrant True. But how sad is the fact that sometimes students sacrifice alot to put in the effort they do only to be told that they not good enough - help willing students get the excellence rather than telling them it is what it is!!

Another AMR dogma that bothers me; antibiotic resistance has a fitness cost. If that is the case, why does it persist? Why do we find the same resistant organisms months after a patient has been discharged if there is a fitness cost?
Today is International Microorganism Day (@IntMicroDay) – an annual celebration of microbiology! We celebrate and promote the diversity and variety of microorganisms. Find out 'What is Microbiology?' on our website: https://t.co/5u2l4Ml308 🔬🦠
@dbikard@AHarms485@joel_rosenbaum This is slightly inaccurate - ccc does denature but it is topologically linked so it rapidly reanneals upon neutralisation. There are also neutral detergent based methods for plasmid extraction as some sequences retain local unpairing after alkaline treatment.
If like me you've run hundreds of minipreps but never bothered to read up on why they extract plasmid but not chromosomal DNA, a recent tweet by @joel_rosenbaum finally motivated me to look it up. From Biennium and Doly 1979:
