Over the past 16 years, independent Hungarian journalism played a key role in uncovering corruption and abuses of power. Since the April 12 election, however, it is becoming increasingly clear that in the years ahead, one of the primary tasks will be tracing stolen assets that have been moved abroad.

Now that Hungarian authorities are expected to stop covering for them, the stakes will be far higher for corrupt Hungarian politicians and oligarchs. Because beyond the fate of the staggeringly large stolen fortunes, their own impunity — and that of their family members — and their freedom are on the line.

I hope I'm wrong, but I fear this means a far more dangerous period lies ahead of us.

The thing to remember about Hungarian illiberalism is that it emerged in very country-specific circumstances. Namely, the veritable self-immolation of the Hungarian center and left after 2006, the resulting near-monopoly on power gained by Fidesz, and various historical neuroses.
