According to @RMS_Oxford, the sun will set tomorrow (Saturday 21 October) in Oxford at 18:01.
This is the last time that the sun will set after 18:00 until Sunday 10 March 2024.
Would you like to help climate scientists?
If so, today we launch our latest #WeatherRescue project.
Join other volunteers to transcribe lost weather observations. The mission is to recover pressure measurements taken in Oxford between 1828-1860.

Last week we said goodbye to Anlin Chen, who has been recording observations since December 2020! She has been an integral part of the team and will be greatly missed at RMS Oxford. All the very best for the future, Anlin!
In March @RMS_Oxford recorded 133.9mm of rainfall which is the highest-ever March total for the station. The previous highest total was 133.6mm in 1862. The most rainfall on any day was 15.3mm. There were 6 days recorded over 10mm and
Rainfall occurred on 27 of the 31 days.
Did you know that we write monthly (and yearly) reports on our observations at the Radcliffe Met Station? Email [email protected] to be added to our mailing list!
Despite the onset of autumn, September 2022 was still fairly warm at RMS Oxford, with a monthly average temperature of 15.6°C. This ranks joint 11th out of 205 in our September temperature records.
RMS Oxford recorded 11.4mm of rainfall across July and August, which is the driest since our records began in 1815. The next driest July and August occurred in 1955, with 18.8mm of rainfall observed. It's easy to see why Oxford was given drought status!
@bablakewx@greentempleton We take our wind and sunshine measurements at another location to avoid the impact of the nearby trees and buildings. They also look much closer in that photo than they are in reality!
Yesterday several observers chatted to the public about our weather station and its history, as part of @greentempleton's Oxford Open Doors event. Thank you to everyone who came along and spoke to us! #OxfordOpenDoors
The mini heatwave in August 2022 didn't produce a new maximum temperature record at RMS Oxford, but temperatures climbed over 30°C on 5 consecutive days (10th-14th August). This is the joint third longest period over 30 degrees in the station's long history.
Only 236.1mm of precipitation was measured at the Radcliffe Met Station between January and July 2022, the fewest since 1976. And with no rainfall recorded during August so far, could we see records broken from beyond 1976?
Matt taking this morning’s observations, including readings from the Newman barometer in the Radcliffe Observatory. The barometer was installed in 1838 and is still in daily use today!

The pressure wave from the Tongan volcanic eruption was detected in Oxford by the @OxfordAOPP AWS at 19:00 on 15th Jan, and 02:00 on 16th Jan! (Unfortunately, time series data for pressure are not available @RMS_Oxford since a manual barometer is read there once a day only)
Happy New Year from everyone at the Radcliffe Met Station!
With a maximum temperature of 15.0°C, yesterday was the warmest New Year’s Eve in the @RMS_Oxford record, surpassing the previous record of 13.6°C set in 1859!

This is both funny and amazing. Type in the title of your dissertation. “sensible heat flux over heterogenous vegetation” (the image is a lot more interesting than my PhD was). https://t.co/47fP8Mz3QH
@metoffice Our sunniest December day was actually 1st Dec 2017 with 7.7 hours! We have both 1961 and 1981 in our top 10 days so it's possibly one of them but I'm not sure!
