'NO REFORMS, NO ELECTION' DOMINATES SOCIAL MEDIA
Tanzanians online have mobilized efforts to amplify CHADEMA’s “No Reforms, No Election” campaign, which has rapidly become the most talked-about topic across the country’s digital platforms.
The slogan is now flooding comment sections on social media pages of government institutions, political leaders, public figures, and media outlets. The momentum has made it nearly impossible to browse Tanzanian social media without encountering the message. Digital handlers managing official pages have had to expend significant effort in deleting and moderating comments.
“No Reforms, No Election” is a campaign led by opposition party CHADEMA, advocating for critical reforms to Tanzania’s electoral system. The party alleges a pattern of injustices during previous local elections, including the disqualification of their candidates, challenges in declaring election results, and systemic flaws within the structure and operations of the National Electoral Commission.
Speaking to Mwananchi about the surge of social media users posting “No Reforms, No Election,” Government Spokesperson Gerson Msigwa urged the public to avoid what he described as “unproductive campaigns” and instead use digital platforms as opportunities to learn and embrace new technologies.
“People should recognize that misusing social media is a waste of financial resources, especially considering the data bundles they use,” he said.
In his remarks, Msigwa added, “What’s happening on social media is nonsense. It’s pure nonsense. Tanzanians should focus on building their country. You can’t run a campaign to block elections when the country has already set its official electoral calendar.”
However, what is particularly striking about the campaign is the participation of users who typically steer clear of political content, now openly sharing and promoting the message.
