As part of our topic on Defending Wakefield, we have designed and made clay pots. We decided to paint our pots in lots of different bright colours.

Today Year 1 and 2 explored Sandal Castle as part of our topic called 'Defending Wakefield!' We looked for features of the castle that are still intact, drew pictures of the different parts of the castle and also had time to identify microhabitats to link with our science work.

Year 1 and 2 enjoyed learning all about how animals use their senses, from our visitor from ZooLab. We looked at a giant snail, a stick insect, a scorpion, a ball python and an Australian Tree frog. Some of us held or touched the animals. It was a super experience!

Year 1 and 2 have been investigating which material might make the best umbrella this morning. We used a range of materials and concluded that whilst tin foil was good at waterproofing, it was not the best umbrella. Plastic got the most votes.

Today in Year 1 and 2 we did our second 'Materials' investigation. In the dark, we used a torch to test a range of materials to find out which one would make the best curtains for a bedroom.

Today Year 1 and 2 have been doing a science investigation to find out which materials would be best at mopping up a spill. We found out that socks and kitchen roll are very absorbent, because they contain lots of tiny little holes.

We had great fun this morning in the forest school area, chopping sticks for the fire and toasting our marshmallows.

In Year 1 and 2 we have been doing a traffic survey. We looked for different types of vehicles passing school, and even had a chat with a passing policeman!

Today Year 1 / 2 tried to decide in which area of our school grounds most rain might be collected. We set up some containers to catch the rainfall and next week we will compare the locations and try to work out which areas get the most rain and why.

Year 1 / 2 had a successful (if a bit muddy) visit to and around Stanley Marsh this morning. We identified lots of human and physical features in the landscape and thought about which landscapes we might paint in the style of David Hockney.

In our forest school session today we had a bug hunt. We found worms, woodlice and spiders' eggs. We had a 'who can find the biggest leaf' contest, and also wore 'worm eyebrows'!

Today the Year 1 and 2 children had opportunity to share a book with some of the children in Year 5 and Year 6. We talked about the sort of books older children might like to read, and about how well they can do it!

Today we had a visit from Sabre the labrador, who is an ambassador for Guide Dogs. We found out that guide dog puppies go to school to learn how to be guide dogs. We now know that if a dog is wearing a harness, we should not disturb it because it are working.

This morning we had an assembly by 'Renewi', Wakefield Council's waste management facility. We learned about what happens to the rubbish we throw away, and how important it is to reduce, reuse and recycle.

This week we have been learning about the compass points north, south, east and west. 'Forest Tom' helped us to follow directions using a compass.

This morning we had a visit from Tony and Eddie, former local coal miners, who told us all about what it was like to be a coal miner in Yorkshire in the past, and showed us some of their mining equipment.

Last week the children planted some new plants in the flower beds outside Mrs Milfull's and Mr Robertshaw's classrooms. We are going to add some bulbs this week and pull the weeds out of the other flower bed in preparation for winter.

Today the children in Key Stage 1 took part in a workshop all about Florence Nightingale, run by West End in Schools. They used their drama skills to help remember her place in history, her legacy and to think about how hospitals changed because of her.
