It’s the Bacteria, Not You: Why Your Careful Antibiotic Use Still Leaves You Vulnerable
—————————————————
Many people believe that if they personally use antibiotics responsibly—only when prescribed and always finishing the full course—they’ll stay safe from resistance. That’s a common and understandable misconception, but it misses how resistance actually works.
Resistance isn’t something that happens inside your body. It’s the bacteria that evolve. These tiny organisms multiply incredibly fast and constantly mutate. When antibiotics are present, they kill the vulnerable bacteria, but any that happen to carry resistance genes survive, multiply, and take over. Bacteria can also swap these resistance genes directly with each other through a process called horizontal gene transfer—even between completely different species.
The resistant “superbugs” that result don’t stay in one place. They spread through everyday contact, hospitals, contaminated food or water, travel, and even the environment. So even if you’ve never misused an antibiotic in your life, you can still encounter a resistant infection that originated from someone else’s overuse, agricultural practices, or natural bacterial evolution.
That’s why antibiotic resistance is a community and global issue, not just a personal one. Your responsible habits are still incredibly valuable—they reduce the overall pressure that drives more resistance to emerge and spread. By using antibiotics wisely, supporting stewardship programs, and raising awareness, we all help preserve these life-saving drugs for everyone, including future generations. It’s collective action that makes the real difference.

So I was talking to a patient today and he was fully convinced he’s safe from antibiotic resistance because he personally never misuses them.
Had to gently break the news that it’s not your body that gets resistant, it’s the bacteria.
World Bank warns: Uganda running out of jobs
By the end of 2025, Uganda faced an estimated jobs deficit of 1.64 million, while about 90% of the country’s workforce remained in the informal sector.
“Closing this gap is not just an economic priority; it is the defining development challenge of the next decade.”

Many patients leave hospitals and pharmacies without fully understanding the diagnosis, dosage, side effects, or what medicines should never be mixed. Some never ask questions because they fear sounding disrespectful.
But silence in healthcare can be dangerous.
President @KagutaMuseveni has assented to eight pieces of legislation, including the National Drug and Health Products Authority Act, 2026, which expands regulation across medicines, vaccines, medical devices, diagnostics, cosmetics, and other health products, strengthening safety and oversight.
Also assented to were the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act, 2026, introducing mandatory energy standards, audits, and regulation of inefficient technologies, and the Non-Performing Assets Recovery Trust (Repeal) Act, 2024, which dissolves the Trust and transfers its functions to the Ministry of Finance to streamline operations.
The Employment (Amendment) Act, 2025 strengthens protections for domestic, casual, and migrant workers, while the Forensic and Scientific Analytical Services Act, 2026 enhances forensic systems and evidence handling. Other laws assented to include the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights (Amendment) Act, 2026, the Public Enterprises Reform and Divestiture (Amendment) Act, 2024, and the Magistrates Courts (Amendment) Act, 2026.

Studies indicate that the world is growing older, but Africa is growing younger, and this trend holds true. This means the future workforce of the world will come from the continent. As a result, we have decided to invest heavily in the education space- Adrian Bukenya, Country Director Mastercard Foundation Ug

#YoungAfricaWorks
The past three days @MestilHotel have been a truly inspiring journey of learning, collaboration, and connection with the communication team of the #YoungAfricaWorks program, an initiative of the @MastercardFdn.
What stood out most was the powerful realization of how communication can bridge the gap between our work and the communities far beyond the tarmac roads, ‘those at the last mile’. Together, we explored how to tap into the immense opportunities within the #YoungAfricaWorks initiative to create meaningful impact and lasting change.
As John Seel Muraguri, Director of Country Program Communications at the @MastercardFdn, beautifully put it, “We are program people with communication expertise.” These words will always remind us that with the right message, context, and purpose, we can drive meaningful change in communities.
The journey continues!
