Roisin continued, “If the reforms are to work, we need far-reaching change. Currently, it is possible to reach the highest level of the scheme without actually having a disabled employee.
“We do very much understand the impact on mental health the loss of a driving licence related to sight loss can have, especially if people have been driving for many years, so we also want to make sure anyone who needs it gets support.” 🫶
“Catching it early, they can be stabilised, they can be prevented from progressing in many instances, and we can keep people driving safely.” 🚗
Dr Peter Hampson, from the Association of Optometrists, spoke to In Touch this week about proposed changes to driving law.
She added, “Many conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, and age-related macular degeneration - which are more common as we get older and can occur gradually without obvious symptoms - are treatable, so eye examinations as regularly as every two years, are vitally important.”
