I was suited up in the Argus exoskeleton in the starboard airlock before Keyla could reason with me that it was a damn stupid idea.

I wouldn't listen, because I knew she was right. But I was determined to find out just what the hell was going on out on the surface of Kaiber-7631 and see for myself the damage she'd caused to the Arion.

And if there was some thing, some unknown life form, some threat stalking what was left of the ship, I needed to know it, and deal with it. Halc seemed more intent on scaring us than helping in that regard.

"Captain...!"

If I'm honest, my friends, it was the crushing black guilt of closing that cabin door on the crew, no matter how necessary it had been, that drove me forward now. I brushed off Keyla's reasoned protests like so many Theta med-drones from my injuries.

Remember when I told you I'd had a death wish back then? Funny how that shows up sometimes.

"Captain, dammit, listen to me!" Keyla finally shouted sharply, as the suit locked around my frame and started pressurizing.

"Pilot..." I acknowledged begrudgingly.

"I formally demand you stand down."

"Not gonna happen, Keyla," I said firmly, not harshly. I punched in the code to seal the internal airlock.

"Then as Acting First Officer, I request a Statement of Mission Objectives, an Order 17A for Superior Officer S&R, and orders for the Arion in your absence."

Gods be damned, time was slipping away. But she knew procedure and had every right to lodge the requests. I was leaving her alone and I probably wasn't ever coming back.

I looked at her with sympathy and not a little admiration. She'd won this compromise.

"Pilot, Mission Objectives as follows: Active reconnaissance on exterior of The Arion; Emergency Search and Rescue Assessment Operations for crew; Foreign Threat Assessment, Procedure: Gamma 7, (possible lethal hostile engagement). In event of compromised Superior Officer, First Officer is ordered to stand down and not to attempt recovery. And I leave the Arion at your full discretion, Pilot. If you can get the damn ship running again, she's yours."

I sealed the internal airlock door, clicked the helmet into place, and grabbed an AX-19 Gravemark from the rack.

"May the Gods favor you, Captain," Keyla responded over the coms. "Your endeavors are faithful and you're one damned stubborn sonofabitch."

I smiled at her through the window. I initiated the procedure to open the external airlock door.

It was only when I heard the rumble of metal and blasting hiss of pressurized air that the enormity of what I was doing hit me.

I was going to touch down on this dead planet, see my dead ship, find whatever was left of my crew, encounter whatever thing was stalking the wreckage, and very likely, in one quick violent bundling of my life into the Eternal Mystery, come face to face with the Gods.

I gripped the pommel of the Gravemark and stepped into the darkness beyond.
