@johnsemley3000 @itsliamegan @DingoNoir To the extent that Hal and (especially) Orin are autobiographical characters they are extremely self-critical ones. As someone mentioned upthread Orin is a monster; even the sympathetic Hal is depicted as repellent to people outside the Enfield/Incandenza bubble.

Hal and Orin are different kinds of prep school twits who speak in a mix of familial and school slang. There’s affection there, and some self-amusement on DFW’s part in inventing their argot, but cool they are not.
