How much is this teeny-tiny ancient Greek coin worth? Ben Akrigg (Associate Professor, @UofT) talks about how the Greek monetary system worked during the Late Archaic/Early Classical Period, around two and a half thousand years ago.

Wish we had one of these in @ROMtoronto's collection! This #Greek #coin from 5th century BCE Athens @metmuseum is a dekadrachm, worth 10 drachmas. We have some tetradrachms (worth 4 drachmas), but nothing this big.

Can you spot Helios, the sun god, driving his 4-horsed chariot on this #Greek #coin from Athens? Look for the sun rays and horse heads. It was a symbol of the Athenian magistrates who minted the coin in 119/118 BCE. Happy #solstice2024!

This #coin of Seleukid king Antiochos III shows Apollo sitting on the 'omphalos' from the sanctuary at Delphi. In #Greek #Myth this was the stone that the Titan Kronos was tricked into swallowing believing it was his son the baby Zeus!
