This term is widely used in books, online discussions, and some secondary accounts for a purported systematic campaign by “fifth column powers” to recruit journalists, editors, and media executives at major U.S. outlets for domestic propaganda, narrative control, and influence.

No official documents exist outlining this operation from American institutions. But other foreign groups do however proudly claim to lobby the same aforementioned groups & for the same purpose. And evidence shows us, they’re quite effective.

The real Project Mockingbird was a short-lived 1963 CIA telephone-intercept/wiretapping operation targeting two Washington-based journalists (Robert S. Allen and Paul Scott of the “Allen-Scott Report”) who were publishing classified material. It ran roughly from March to June 1963, was authorized by CIA Director John McCone (in coordination with Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and others), and is explicitly described in the CIA’s declassified “Family Jewels” compilation (released 2007) and related records. Its purpose was leak investigation/surveillance, not recruitment or propaganda placement.
