It was a marathon to the marathon.
When I secured my spot in the 2020 Boston Marathon, I wanted to raise awareness for a good cause with my race. Being in biotech, I quickly decided to support the fight against SLC6A1, โฆ
a rare neurological disorder that leads to developmental delays and seizures in small children. No cure is available to date. Amberโs son, Maxwell, is suffering from SLC6A1 and she started SLC6A1 Connect a few years ago.
Finally, last Monday, my journey took me to Hopkinton to run the Boston Marathon for Maxwell and everyone in the fight to find a cure for SLC6A1. I was overwhelmed by the spirit of this marathon and the great support along the course.
In the meantime, amazing progress was made by Amber and her team: Existing drugs are being evaluated for their potential to help patients with mutations in SLC6A1 and new therapies using cutting edge technology are being developed by researchers across the globe.
The mission to run the Boston Marathon was not completed with a virtual marathon. I used the opportunity to show my support for the fight against rare diseases at the Chicago and New York City Marathon in 2021 and re-qualified for Boston in 2022.
The Boston Marathon in 2020 went virtual in Fall and I spent my training doing running art to draw objects while training and receiving great support along the way.
