For long we have talked about the Evangelicals, but today I will talk about the mainstream protestant churches, especially those outside Nairobi.

When you attend a Sunday service in the village, you are likely to leave the church thinking more about matoleo (financial contributions) than the word of God.

There are so many financial demands on Church members in different groups, and this almost becomes the focus of the programme. The services have also become long due to these other issues, that by the time we are getting to the sermon people’s minds and hearts are already too tired to receive sababu kanisa imekuwa kama Zakayo.

It is very unfortunate when the church becomes a place of financial stress, instead of being a place of solace, comfort and edification for believers. The leadership of these churches needs to re-think their approach, and stop undertaking over-ambitious unending projects which burden the congregation, taking away the focus from the word of God and the fundamental purpose for which the church was established. A church service should be simple and Christ focused!
