The Ivy League presidents did a horrible job answering Stefanik’s question and have added an extra dose of toxicity to this discourse. If a student is actually calling for genocide it’s not hard to see how that can become a conduct violation even if it’s only speech and they should have said so. The MIT president tried to take it out of the hypothetical and said she hadn’t seen any such calls on her campus. Stefanik said there had been calls for “intifada” which is the arabic word for uprising. That’s where this gets muddy: An uprising can be violent or non-violent and is not by definition a call for genocide.

When an American student chants intifada or “from the river to the sea” there’s no doubt many people hear that as genocidal or threatening but A) many of the students chanting that are themselves Jewish and not calling for genocide and B) many simply mean they support full Palestinian rights within the area Israel controls. You can’t say that calling for voting rights and equal rights for Palestinians under occupation is a call for genocide. But if somebody is *actually* calling for genocide that definitely is a conduct question. But there have been no examples of that presented. If there are any, please put them in the replies so we can condemn them.
