We are planning a celebration in Oxford of Geraldine Carter’s life and her contributions to education. If you knew her through her work on reading or through researchED and would like details, please reply or send a private message to [email protected]. (5/5)
Geraldine Carter died on 17 May, aged 87. Many will remember her as kind, generous, wise, funny, and always ready with insight, encouragement or challenge. (1/5)
In her later years she loved nothing more than attending researchED events. Her contribution over decades was remarkable, and it’s hard to imagine the RRF without her. She will be very much missed. (4/5)

@JohnBaldLangLit@mazst Children have no problem with this; if they pronounce the word with the wrong /th/ sound and it's in their vocabulary, they usually tweak it to the correct pronunciation anyway. 2/2
@JohnBaldLangLit@mazst The RRF agrees that it's a good idea to teach words like "the, then, that, this" together; and to include words where <th> is pronounced as the unvoiced /th/ in 'thorn' and 'path'. 1/2
@JohnBaldLangLit@mazst We’re curious to know about a secret panel. Which panel are you talking about, John? If you mean the panel that validates programmes, there is no one from the RRF on it. 5/5
@JohnBaldLangLit@mazst We are sorry to hear that some schools are teaching exception words as words to be memorised by “look and say”, but that is not what the RRF or the DfE recommend. 4/5
