Going to the police is NOT the only way to report rаpe.
At a Thuthuzela Care Centre, if a survivor wishes to report the rаpe an investigating officer can take a statement for the survivor to get justice.
These services are FREE.
Less than 20% of reported rape cases proceed to trial, & studies show that the highest attrition occurs at the police investigation phase.

What is Case Attrition in the criminal justice system? There is a massive ‘drop-out’ rate between when a rape case is reported & when a case is finalised.
All survivors need access to post rape care services so that they are able to make informed choices about reporting, their health and their mental wellbeing.
meaning that these numbers represent only a small fraction of the real statistics.
Every time these figures are released, people are “shocked & outraged” - & yet nothing changes.
12,211 rape cases were reported between the start of October & the end of December 2024, according to the most recent crime statistics of the South African Police Service (SAPS).
On average, that is 132 cases reported each day.
