We specialise in petrographic analysis of various materials, including concrete, mortar, plaster, aggregate, building stone, and ceramic building material.
Just popping in on this #ThinSectionThursday to say the #Petrography team is still working, supporting the construction industry with #concrete analysis. One person in each lab at a time!
Alkali-silica gel is a problem for the concrete, but always makes for interesting images. It's fun to find, but a shame to see. #ThinSectionThursday#concrete#petrography

Another #ThinSectionThursday two-fer. This one is ASR gel in old concrete, shown in PPL and at higher mag in XPL. It's sad news for the concrete, but a somewhat exciting surprise for #petrographers to see so much of it at once.
November’s 'Concrete' includes a piece from @RSKPetrography, which discusses the site and laboratory techniques used to preserve concrete marine structures.

Throughout November we'll be posting some of our favourite trees from our travels. Here is Patrick in front of Rikusho-no-Matsu, a 600yr old pine tree which is tailored to the shape of a sailing boat. It's facing west, meaning people could ride the boat to the western pure land.
Happy Halloween #petrographers! Here's a friendly ghost for #ThinSectionThursday (full disclosure, we've posted this one before, but it seemed fiar today of all days)

Happy #ThinSectionThursday#petrographers Organic material makes for some really nice images in thin section. There's plenty of animal hair in this sample, but did we manage to catch the follicle here? #historicplaster
Was surprised to see such a massive growth of gypsum in this render sample. We were warned it was possible, but didn't expect this much. #ThinSectionThursday#HistoricRender

Alkali-silica reaction is one of the things we look for in concrete samples. This one was clearly suffering, with ASR gel in the cracks and voids. #ThinSectionThursday
