@Vern_Funquist I think part of it was that LSU failed to realize that, for unclear reasons, undrafted rookie free agents who attended minicamp would be treated as college players taking a semester off whereas their counterparts who survived one additional round of cuts are treated as NFL vets.

How hard is it to go back-to-back? Who remembers this @LSUbaseball moment?

In 1997, we were 4 outs away from being eliminated in our own regional. We were upset by South Alabama game 1. We were down 7-3 to Long Beach State the next day until Tommy Bernhardt hit a 3 run home run to make it 7-6. I came up in the bottom of the 8th with a full count and two outs, and hit a high fly ball that scraped the back of the right field wall to tie it at 7-7.

Patrick Coogan, one of our big guns, pitched four innings of relief. He had a great move to first base and was called for a balk. Skip stormed out of the dugout, turned his hat around, bumped the umpire, and got tossed. It was the first and last time I saw him get run, and a brilliant move. The crowd went insane. I’ve never heard Alex Box Stadium as loud as it was that night. We won this 5 hour game in 11 innings, then double-dipped South Alabama the next day.

All that to say, the best team I ever played on, and arguably the most dominant in LSU history with 188 home runs, almost didn’t make it to Omaha that year. It’s that hard.

I know the Tigers won’t take anything for granted. The faithful will be out in force to root this team on in their quest for the second back-to-back natty in LSU history on the 30 year anniversary of the “shot heard around the bayou.” One week away. Good luck men! 🐅

@statsowar Even “net roster talent” doesn’t really work, as the rosters are too big and the contribution per player is nowhere near uniform. Has to be weighted by something, even as simple as expected % of snaps played.

@ESPN_BillC Considering that Alabama lost its last road game in a full stadium before Covid and its second road game when full stadiums came back, it’s not unreasonable qualifier. To put it another way, between November 2019 and mid-October 2021 Bama went 1-2 in full-stadium road games.
