@history_dame@VARevolution250 Ok. I was all pooped out from
harassing the redcoats down the street at our 1775 celebrations but it's that time of the season. I actually liked the young kids seemed to really enjoy talking to the actors. They did great job
@EchoesofWarYT I'd say ambitious lose cannon. Not low self esteem but ego. I think an ego well deserved with bravery and ambition. I think the monument at Saratoga is so profoundly appropos.
@SalinaBBaker Team Col Robinson and Cobble Hill here. He's my neighbor now out in the suburbs. Back at the siege back then. I watched many 4thJuly fireworks from my attic. It's pretty far. I guess Washington/Greene/Knox inspected the area frequently. Go Old Sow!!!
@JC12664@SalinaBBaker I believe the Celtic cross was common in the Victorian era New England. It was the trend. You'll see them quite often in the Victorian cemeteries.
@SWOConnell General Gage: "Will he fight?"
โAbijah Willard: "I cannot answer for his men, but Colonel Prescott will fight you to the gates of hell."
โOther versions of this exchange record Willard saying, "Prescott is an old soldier, he will fight as long as a drop of blood is in his vein
@SWOConnell Either way, the British high command was warned that the man across from them was not a "rabble" leader who would flee at the first sight of Redcoats.
@SWOConnell British General Thomas Gage was surveying the American fortifications through a telescope when he recognized Prescott. He turned to a local Loyalist (and Prescott's brother-in-law), Abijah Willard, and asked if the rebel colonel would actually fight.
โThe Famous Exchange
@SWOConnell I pass by his grave often. Along with Shattuck and Robinsons. They were brothers in arms at Bunker Hill. Close neighbors that would oppose each other post war. I talk with the Shattucks often.
@SalinaBBaker Recent find. The pix showing knox's March through Worcester I posted. I always thought the path was due to Bigelow but found the house of Elijah Dix was even closer. Mercy Scollay and Warrens children waited for Joseph's return just before Bunker Hill. "Army wives" were a plenty
