I urge you to exercise greater restraint and to view your role in its proper context. It is inappropriate to publicly criticize a country and tarnish its image simply because you disagree with judicial proceedings. I have already told you this. Would you consider it acceptable for our Ambassador in Washington to do the same?

In Belgium, the judiciary is independent and makes its decisions—whether one agrees with them or not—free from any political influence.

I recall that the proceedings in question were initiated by representatives of the Jewish community themselves. To portray those as a country’s desire to undermine the religious freedom of Jews is defamatory. This freedom has never been called into question and never will be in our country. Our Constitution protects it.

And it is not for an ambassador to dictate the government’s agenda.

Tien jaar na de aanslagen in Brussel en Zaventem herdenken we de slachtoffers en de vele levens die voorgoed zijn veranderd.

Terroristen probeerden ons te verdelen en te verlammen met angst. Maar tien jaar later zien we hoe mensen elkaar blijven vasthouden en kiezen voor menselijkheid en waardigheid, vaak in kleine, stille gebaren.

Wie verantwoordelijkheid draagt voor onze veiligheid, heeft de plicht de lessen uit het verleden ter harte te nemen. Die plicht neem ik zeer ernstig. Ik ben bijzonder dankbaar voor de tomeloze inzet en de moed van talloze hulpverleners en veiligheidsdiensten die dag in dag uit paraat staan om onze manier van leven te beschermen.

Vandaag gaan mijn gedachten uit naar alle slachtoffers, hun naasten en iedereen wiens leven door terreur is getekend.

Dix ans après les attentats de Bruxelles et de Zaventem, nous nous souvenons des victimes et des nombreuses vies qui ont été changées à jamais.

Les terroristes ont tenté de nous diviser et de nous paralyser par la peur. Mais dix ans plus tard, nous voyons comment les gens continuent de se soutenir mutuellement et de choisir l’humanité et la dignité, souvent à travers de petits gestes discrets.

Les responsables de notre sécurité ont le devoir de tirer les leçons du passé. Je prends cette responsabilité très au sérieux. Je suis profondément reconnaissant pour le dévouement inlassable et le courage des nombreux intervenants des services de secours et de sécurité qui sont prêts, jour après jour, à protéger notre mode de vie.

Aujourd’hui, mes pensées vont à toutes les victimes, à leurs proches et à tous ceux dont la vie a été marquée à jamais par le terrorisme.

Zehn Jahre nach den Anschlägen in Brüssel und Zaventem gedenken wir der Opfer und der vielen Leben, die für immer verändert wurden.

Terroristen versuchten uns zu spalten und uns mit Angst zu lähmen. Doch zehn Jahre später sehen wir, wie Menschen weiterhin füreinander einstehen und sich für Menschlichkeit und Würde entscheiden – oft durch kleine, stille Gesten.

Diejenigen, die für unsere Sicherheit verantwortlich sind, haben die Pflicht, die Lehren aus der Vergangenheit zu beherzigen. Ich nehme diese Pflicht sehr ernst. Ich bin zutiefst dankbar für den unermüdlichen Einsatz und den Mut der vielen Einsatzkräfte und Sicherheitsdienste, die Tag für Tag bereitstehen, um unsere Lebensweise zu schützen.

Heute sind meine Gedanken bei allen Opfern, ihren Angehörigen und allen, deren Leben vom Terror gezeichnet wurde.

Ten years after the attacks in Brussels and Zaventem, we remember the victims and the many lives that were changed forever.

Terrorists tried to divide us and paralyze us with fear. But ten years later, we see how people continue to stand by one another and choose humanity and dignity, often through small, quiet gestures.

Those responsible for our security have a duty to take the lessons of the past to heart. I take that duty very seriously. I am deeply grateful for the tireless dedication and courage of the many emergency responders and security services who stand ready day in and day out to protect our way of life.

Today, my thoughts are with all the victims, their loved ones, and everyone whose life has been scarred by terror.

Terug van onze 25ste studiereis @UAfsw naar de multilaterale organisaties in Genève. De crisis van het multilateraal stelsel was nog nooit zo intens tijdens onze reizen sinds 1999. Toch zal het multilateralisme zich zal herbalanceren, aangepast aan de geopolitiek. Kan even duren.
