How valuable is real-time financial market data?

Well in 2022, it was worth $6.6B and averaged 20% of revenue from the 6 largest exchanges.

The revenues for that data are segmented into 3 core categories based on how much data you get and how fast:

Basic. This is a very simple market data feed that gets used for retail brokers or back office systems of banks and trading firms.

For example, whenever you trade on Robinhood you do so for free because the trade is subsidized by Robinhood.

Typically it’s a broad license based on some threshold of end users. If the users go above the bin amount, it’s time to pay a new tier.

Enriched. This is a more advanced market data package that includes things like full depth, higher resolution granularity, etc.

Typically the purchasers of this are non-systematic trading firms. For example, the execution trader of Point72 should have this sort of access as should the dealers at Morgan Stanley.

Customized. How much is this one? Well, how much you got?

There are binary outcomes (feast or famine) to highly known correlations. For example, when the S&P500 moves up a tick, the corresponding ES future is going to move up a tick (or vice versa).

This is almost as guaranteed as death and taxes, so there’s a huge race to be the first one to win this.

Collocating in the same data center and buying the most expensive data package necessary are table stakes.

There is also a lot of money spent on exogenous communication infrastructure like private radio or microwave towers, etc. to shorten the travel time between Secaucus and Aurora.

Realtime financial market data is a big business.

Based on revenue segmentation, a simple heuristic of the value of data can be summarized as the data is maximally valuable at t(0) and decays as a function of time.
